CLS Resale Value
I went onto the Kelley Blue Book site, and looked up my cars "trade in" value.
2001 CL-S, Rear Spoiler, No Navi - 40K miles =
$19,365.
For Comparison (non S TL)
2001 TL, Rear Spoiler, No Navi - 40K miles = $18,960.
So, the S Coupe is only worth $405 more.

Problem is, they're just so damn common and there's not much of a demand for used TL's/CL's, so resale is so-so. It's fine if you plan on keeping the car until it dies, but bad if you're going to keep it for a short time period.
I'm not surprised at the $405.00 premium for the Type S. It's a relative depreciation factor...take X% of the value of the CL Type S, and then take that same X% depreciation for the difference between the base and Type S models.
Oh well.

It's interesting to note that if you keep everything the same, yet just put a more reasonable number in like 12,000 miles instead of 40,000 the value is given at $24,090.
Heavy mileage is a killer...

Everybody always raves about the Value of cars when buying them... Getting the most for your money...
Well, the Flipside of that has to be Re-sale value. Everyone seems to ignore this when saying you get the most for your money.
If a new one is such a Great Value (which it is!!!) why would you expect someone to pay up for your used one???
I'm not complaining here.. just trying to make a point.

If you're comparing our resale Value to say.... BMW (the arguable leader in re-sale value), let's look at it this way...
The reason a 2001 BMW 330 (or was it still 328) is still $31-32,000 is because a NEW one IS $41,000+...
Accroding to this method, a 2001 CL-S (non-navi, w/ 40K) should be around $20,000 because a NEW ONE is around $30,000!! I understand that percentage wise, a CL-S loses a bit more, but in real dollars, it's almost Identical. Certainly nothing to complain about !!
If you want to see Bad Re-sale, look at Anything AMERICAN!!!
Look at the depreciation of a Lincoln Navigator or F-Expedition, now that would be something to complain about...

doesn't seem so bad to me...

I got 24,000 for mine on the trade in March.
2001 w/NAV & 22,000 miles.
It went on the lot for 26,990
It was in the paper for two weeks and now it isn’t.
I don’t know if they sold it locally or traded it away.
I’m keeping this car for 100K so I won’t be worried about resale values for another SIX years or so.

I’m surprised the dealer didn’t scratch them off.
I also wonder what happens if you try to put Turtle Wax over 20+ coats of Zaino.
SHIT probably slides right off.

I should have leased a Type-R when my friend did, he just got out of a 36 month term......15 months early (2000 model, 24k miles), he traded it in for an S2000 yesterday and made $1800 on trading it. Dealer gave him $20k for the car, buyout was a little over $18k. Thats one rare situation.
If I traded my leased 2001 CL-S now (21k miles), I would probably lose $3k or so at this point.

You always get ripped off trading in a car. It's best to sell it yourself.
According to the Automotive Lease Guide (used by banks and dealers to get the residual values when writing leases), Acura comes ranks near the top in retaining value.
A 2002 CL-S shows the following...
24 month: 60%
36 month: 51%
48 month: 44%
60 month: 38%
Those are pretty good numbers.
A 2002 Lexus ES300 has
24 month: 61%
36 month: 53%
48 month: 46%
60 month: 40%
Surprisingly, Bimmers aren't any better - a 330i
24 month: 60%
36 month: 52%
48 month: 45%
60 month: 39%
Go here to check the residual of any car from the past few years.

I would definitely try to sell it outright first. I have never done this. Once you have a buyer, how do you go about closing the deal?
1. Will the buyer usually wait until you pick up your other car?
2. What is the legal paperwork you gotta do?
I know, sounds dumb huh? Hey, I'm an engineer, not a finance guy.

It involves you notifying the DMV of your transfer of ownership, notifying your insurance company of your sell, and notifying your car dealership of your next purchase
Also, usually, the buyer will pick up the car on the same day he gives you the check/cash ... provided that you make sure it clears the bank

Here's a great story for you. Last month I sold my Accord wagon on Autotrader. Guy comes from Michigan to buy it. All is well. Only cost me $35.00 to list and was out there for 6 weeks.
My sister works for an autobroker here in Orlando, gets me access to the dealer auction. I find my CL in 2 weeks:
2001 Type S 9300 miles!!!!
Found all the paper work for the original sale in the glovebox.
1 owner, 67 years old bought it for cash in September of 2000.
His trade-in was a 1995 Inifiniti I-30 with, get this, 16K miles on it.
Think I may have found the deal of the week!!!
Starting on the mods, Comptech springs, AEM CAI, etc....
Cannot decide on wheels though, maybe Antera 309, Hart C2 or C5, or Konig Imagine.
Any opinions????

Has anyone tried to sell a TL-S yet...?
Any idea how there re-sale value compares to a CL-S??
Just curious... My guess would be that the TL-S holds it Value a little better.

I've wondered for years about these lease returns at dealers. If the residual is say 50% why do they list them at 80%? I'd love to pick up a 3 yr old 3 series for 1/2 price according to the residual but every dealer is still trying to get these high prices. Even private sellers are high. So something is not right. Either the person leasing is paying too much or they're sticking it to the used car buyer or both. Sounds like the jewlery business where you buy a ring for $500 and then when you go back years later to see what they would give for it, they offer $50 and put it in the window for $400.

Lease Buy-Out / Payments (WAS: CLS Resale Value)
Residual values kinda suck the way my lease is looking. The buy-out at the end of my lease is quoted at $14k. I have a 2001 CLS with a 48 month lease term, 15k per year. Looks like the car will only be worth $11k.. Looks like I won't be able to sell it and make any $$.. sucks to be me I guess. I think my payment is pretty reasonable though. I put $3k down and pay $415/month for 15k miles a year.. How does that compare with everyone elses lease payments?? I was told I got a good deal, but who knows.

I don't take the info on KBB as the bible. Just try to find a CL-S for $19K. Good luck! (At least in the Los Angeles area). Print out the KBB page, take it to a dealer who has a used car, and tell them you only want to pay $19K for the car they have listed for at $27K. He'll have one answer for you: :shakehd:
