CLS Factory Paint Problem (rust)

I have a white 01 CLS which I washed the other day (finally). I noticed that there are tiny little rust stains all over it. It looks similar to tar, but it is rust colored and they don't come off.

Any ideas? Would this be covered under warranty?

Thanks

it's probably rail dust...a clay bar should take care of it

As I understand it, it is almost like pitting of the paint that occurs when cars are shipped by rail. Leaves little brown marks on the paint that look like rust, but are really not, morel like surface blemishes that can be removed with a clay bar.

Weird.

I have the same rust colored spots on my white CL too... but they are only on the rear of the trunk.

Never have figured out what caused them. They seem to go away when I wax it but they come back evenutally.

I don't believe it is rail dust since they weren't there when I got the car. I think it is some type of defect with the stock paint job. I'm going to take it to the Acura dealership to have them check it out. It should be covered under warranty.

That would be sweet if I got a whole new paint job. I may have to get the Verus kit if that happens.

Any others have problems with this?

I got the same problem. I think it happens to white and silver cl's a lot. Clay bar as mention in a earlier post should solve the problem.

I'm not about to clay bar the whole f'in car. It is everywhere. Doesn't a clay bar scratch the paint?

I have the same thing on my silver paint, clay did not remove it.

I believe there was a thread on the detailing forum about this topic as well.

No sir. Claybar safely remove harmful contaminants, old wax, from your paint. So that you start with a fresh surface.

I have these spots too on my white CLS, claybar will help but they seem to come back eventually. I mainly only see them on the top of my rear bumper.

I think that what we are seeing comes from brake dust. It is composed of tiny (hot) metal particles that adhere to the paint, then rust. This is my theory.

The reason I suspect brake dust is that I have noticed it on my white CL-S several times as well as on my white Civic, and my yellow ITR (not as obvious on the yellow). The one time I took my CL-S to the track, and many times after taking the Civic and Type R - I would notice the problem was much worse. Since I was using racing brake pads (more metal), making a lot of dust, and my brakes were very hot (hot enough to catch on fire once in fact), I felt that the tiny "rust spots" must be from the metal in the pads or possibly from the rotors themselves.

More data to back up my theory: I try to wax my car before track days to make it easier to get the rubber marks (from the tire "marbles" thrown by me and by those in front of me) off the front and sides of the car afterwards. When I wax my car just prior to a track day, the "rust spots" problem seems to be better.

In any event, I have always been able to clean them off with clay or fine polish.

Anyone having the problem return without driving the car?
Anyone with ceramic rotors or pads have any input?

Bottom line....

I want a new paint job free since it is obviously an Acura defect.

Acura paint is horrible. I was accused of repainting my car by an appraiser due to extreme variations in the paint thickness. They deducted $3000 from my appraisal.

rail dust are slivers of metal lodged in the paint that wont come out without a clay bar its not the paint thats bad and it can be fixed
try this stuff http://www.diamondite.com its supposed to be a lot easier to use than traditional clay bar

if the clay bar doesnt work you can always sand into the clear and buff it back out

They come out fine with a polishing compound... it's just a pain that they keep reappearing.

Acura here in Boise said it comes from the solvent they use to de-ice the roads. He also said the sand is what chips the paint causing it to eventually rust.

I'm calling BS on his assessment. If it was rail dust from the original shipment they should be responsible for it.

Oh well. I guess I'll have to pay to have it all repainted. Once I get a body kit

I think it could just be a cobination of things whats in the water, and road debre usally depending on the dirt in your area. it not common just on acura. ( but we do have crap paint) my dads lexus is white and he gets it too. use clay like every one said it should come out, and then I used blackfire polish, his car han't had it since i've used blackfires, but then again it could be lots of diffrent reason for not coming back.

J mac next time i come down to austin we should do your car.

It's on the whole f'in car. Everywhere. I'm not about to sand the whole car down and then repaint it myself.

I never said mine was rust. I just said "these spots", what I should have said is "I have these spots that resemble rust". I do understand that plastic cannot rust.
Nevertheless, I have spots that are annoying, but claying and cleaner wax take away.

i recently fixed this on ym silver TL-S. it was all over my rear bumper and on the trunk as well. i used mother's claybar and it came off after some rubbing with the bar. im gonna do it one more time because there are still a few spots but this stuff really works.

anyways, just clay bar your car, its really worht it, regardless if you have these rust spots or not... it leaves the paint extremely smooth.

I used a clay bar on my CL a few months ago to help get crud off my car (it was transported across country on a truck). It was amazing how much crap that thing got out of the paint! It really doesn't take that long to do the car either. I think I did it in 1 weekend, including the clay bar and a coat of wax.

The spots are rail dust....little flakes of rusty metal that stains the paint. These "stains" can be taken out with a clay bar. I noticed it on m car yesterday, so I clayed the whole car....twice!
