if you eaze off the throttle going into the 2nd gear when it changes does it help the harsh engagement?

do you have any codes??

flashing D5?

does D5 come on when you are in ignition II?

when was the last time you changed the fluid, external ATF filter?

how many miles on this transmission.?

Yeah, my CL has always shifted a little hard when it's cold outside, after starting up. Within 5-10 minutes of driving the shifting is unnoticeable. As a matter of fact, my transmission isn't the only thing that acts funny when it's cold.... then goes back to normal when the car heats up.

I had that problem too and days after that started my tranny wouldnt go out of first gear. it ended up needing to be replaced with a rebuilt. Now with my "new" rebuilt I do not have that problem even when its cold in the morning.

when transmission is cold, its normal to have slightly delayed and harder shifts. It should not slip though. Keep in mind that when you warm up a car idling it does nothing to warm up your transmission, transmission gets warmed up only when the car is moving.

that's not true.. the transmission heats up sitting in neutral..

I got a transmission gauge to prove it.

when you are sitting in a traffic jam or in park the trans is just roasting itself.

when trans is working properly and is cold the shifts shouldn't be hard per se since the transmission actually engages deliberately much slower to avoid the harsh engagements. but I can only expect as the trans gets older.. it'll delay the shifts less and less when cold.. hence why it feels harsher than normal when cold.

tans is getting worn..

My shifts dont get smoother after warm up in neutral. Only after I drive it for few minutes. Your tranny probably gets slightly warmed because its sitting next to engine. They are not harsh either, just more distinct opposed to butter smooth after its fully warmed. And ECU by design makes shifts at slightly higher RPMS when engine is cold.

I would also take my car to autozone, etc and have the codes pulled from your ecu... make sure your not having some other source for the problem.
