CLS 6sp VS. '95 Thunderbird

raced a 1995 Thunderbird ( or a bodystyle like that year's) tonight on the way home from the library. I'm guessing i was the supercharged one b/c it whistled on it's way up. I dind't think that he would want to run but he revved on me pretty hard at a stop sign. I let him get the jump and I spun a bit in 1st. Coudln't tell if his was an auto or a manual. It sounded pretty beastly off the line but once I hit second I started pulling on him. By 3rd it wasn't even a race anymore. I was impressed by how throaty that supercharged V8 engine sounded though. I don't know anything about these, anyone here a fan of these older thunderbirds?

I was interested so I did a bit of research on them..

some pathetic numbers but supposedly the same engine as the Mustang Cobra of the time. They just boosted it a lot less b/c they wanted people ot pay more for the Cobra.

yeah it shouldnt have been a race....there's one around here that I have messed around with and handed him his ass too. They put up a decent fight til about 45, then the CL starts to pull away...good run....hey why did you lose to that Civic w/ the swap? I ran one w/ the exact same setup, all bolt ons, w/75 shot and lost by like 1/2 a car....when he wasnt spraying though it was a different story...oh well I guess each car is built differently....good kill though

why did I lose? but I didn't lose...

I beat him by half a car about. I thought it'd be a good race and it was... really close... could just be out of tune or he rags on it all the time. People with 4s love to go past redline to keep in VTEC range a lot of the times and so they eat up their engines a lot when getting rid of their RPM limiters and pushing an engine originally made for say 7500 RPM and running it to 8500 RPM.

The T-bird had a supercharged V6 not a V8. If it had a blown V8, you would've been blown outta the water. Also, the supercharged V6 is not the same engine as the Cobra. The cobra has never come with a V6. The T-bird should have been close off the line, but you should have taken him up high.

Thunderbird came in a few flavors over years.

The last gen was a IRS rear drive, heavy (3600-3800 lb coupe).

89-93 performance SC auto/5 spd 210/315.
mid 15s in the 1/4 low 90s
94-5 improved auto trans, more agressive tuning 230/330.
15 flat mid 90s.
91-3 V8 model has 5.0 with standard auto trans. dog off the line leading to low to mid 16s at 90 mph 200/275
94-5 4.6 sohc similar to stang, but different motor intake, 205/265 with wide ratio trans getting very high 15s at 90-2 mph.
96-7 sohc, same as same year stang with 205/280, same trans running mid/upper 15s at 90-2 mph.

The cars are heavy and the torque converter and gearing doesn't get them out of the hole that well. All except 94-5 SC should be an easy kill, stock v stock.

The SC has decent tuning, just like the gtp, add a pulley, and exhaust and they can run low to mid 14s. The heads on the motor suck, but it is an intercooled eaton SC. [for comparison the GM cars go from 200/225 to 240/280; the t bird went from 140/215 to 230/330 at 12 psi].

The 5.0 v8 is the 5.0, most mods will fit, u/d pullies, heads, a few intakes (height restriction on the bird).

The 4.6 will accept the 99 + 5.4L heads/GT heads which bring power up to 220 at the wheels and again run low to mid 14s.

As you can probably tell, i've had some in the past. nice cars, handled well, and a bargain in price for what you got and the insurance you had to pay. Surely not i the same class as the cl, but then again you get what you pay for.

My 94 Tbird (4.6 V8 auto) feels like a dog when I drive it after I drive my CLS

My brother's 91 Supercoupe on the other hand is a different story. He's got alot of $$$ into it mods wise (rebuilt engine, head work, new SC, pulleys, etc, etc), so it's a little quicker then my stock CLS.

Tbirds are cheap now (even SC's) so there are alot of young "racers" out there w/ them. The SC uses a M90 superscharger with can only flow so much on the 3.8 motor, so it's the limiting factor on how much HP you get get out of the SC's V6 motor.

Stock vs. Stock the CLS should win every time (SC or 4.6 tbird)

actually a lightly modded SC, minimal stuff, will run with a pre 99 4.6 GT. while they aren't that fast, they can be decently quick. Mid 15s from the factory for early ones, better on the later ones, and mild mods, cold air, exhaust, and pulley and they're well into the 14s.

bkknights; i don't think i was talking about the prelude the other night.
see my school devided into 2 parts
tech and business(i'm in the business side)(but i gotta park in the tech parking lot cause the business lot too small and they gave me a sticker for tech) the idiots have these giant jacked up trucks and they can't park they park them like 4 inches from your door. or they have a POS and think it's the fastest car since the Supra TT.
