cleaning headlights

After 4 years of owning my car, I noticed that my headlights plastic covers(exterior) are not as transperant as they used to be(washing with windex does not help). I was wondering if I could apply some stronger cleaner/solvent which will clean them better. could I apply polisher/solvent without messing things up? Any ideas?
thanks.

Get yourself some aviation windshield polish. It will take out the dullness and scratches. You can find it at a local small airport pilot shop. YOu can also find a windhield cleaner for motorcycles that will work.

It has no scratches, its just dull and foggy looking. Its plastic, so I don't want to melt the plastic by some strong solvents, yet it needs to be stong to do the job. I heard something about plastic polishers, do they really work?

not sure what you're describing -- if the plastic looks cloudy someone may have already tried a solvent.

mine were a little dull and I went over them with wax (not polishing wax) and it cleaned them up pretty well.

try 3m plastic cleaner or 3m perfect-it II compound, either one should do the trick.
