CL-S vs M3
#42
allright, now heres another question although this thread is getting stolen i think lol ...
I used to be into vw golfs a lot, my bro's got a 2002 Gti 1.8t ... he got a new ECU or chip or w/e the hell u call it and it supposably added around 25 to 30 (not wheel) ... there anythin like that for the CL S ?
Thanks

There is a lot of talk on this thread about M3's as if they are all the same. There are at least three generations of M3s (E30, E36, and E46) with a new generation (can you say V8) coming soon, so saying "I beat an M3" is like saying "I eat cereal". Too general, doesn't say anything really. A CLS will walk an E30 M3 but an E36 M3 gets into the driver making the difference category and the E46 M3 would most likely walk a CLS if both were bone stock. As for the new M3 (not sure of the E designation) it will run a stock CLS into the ground.
The other thing that is important when we say that we beat an M3 is whether we're talking a 1/4 mile time or a road course or an autocross. Almost any M3 will walk over a CLS in an autocross, 1/4 mile-depends on which M3/driver combination and the road course - that gets into what type, length, # of turns, etc., etc.
There are also lots of cars that are not in any condition to "race". I've seen M3s that were ready for the junk yard, likewise with the CLS - some are barely driveable. That all makes a differnece in how a car performs.

I thought the E46 (current version) has the 333 hp. Doesn't the E36 have in the 250hp range?
Here's the model designation/years: E30: '84-'91, E36: '92-'98, E46: '99 on
