I was thoroughly unimpressed with the 300M. Typical of all Chryslers I sit in, the seats felt like they were filled with large rocks!??
Those cars just don't fit me for some reason. Power was pretty average as well. Certainly didn't fell any peppier than the Accord V6 I had at the time. And $31K without a sunroof? Ummm... no thanks.

We got the Cl 2 months after owning the 300m lol
List of bads:
interior is shitty and cheesy
its slow
it handles like a yacht
it creaks
it cracks
its CHRYSLER
List of goods:
sound system had a shit load of bass
hell of a lot of room
I won a Lemon Law fight against Chrysler, and made them buy my 300M back. I took the money and got the CL-S. I owned it for 10 months.
The 300M is a lot of value for the money. Good power for a car that size. It is a little sluggish, I would not say it's a boat. It's probably the best all around vehicle they've done. It does have a ton of room. I wouldn't do a comparison of the interior materials. I've had the CL-S for 10 months now. My 300M didn't have the leather wearing out like my Acura is at this point. The dash and door materials were very similar. Slight edge to Acura. Overall fit and finish? Acura... However, I expected better from them. Tranny? Puleease! Chrysler hasn't been able to do a decent trans since the early 70's. The Acura trans is far superior.
Some of the things it has over the CL and TL.
The "upgrade" Infinity smokes the Bose system. It's not excellent, but it SMOKES the Bose. Trip Computer functions are handy. So is a low washer fluid indicator (this really pisses me off in the Acura.) When you push the remote button for unlock, the seat and mirrors moved right then. Not when you opened the door. I didn't have to wait for the seat to retract in the rain. However, I had to be standing within 10 feet of the car for the remote to work.
The indiglo gauges were very nice at night, easy to see, cool effect. There are a few other nice things the 300M has that the Acura doesn't.
BUT..... Overall quality and reliability. Goes to Acura, but I am concerned about the apparent fall from grace. And the worst Acura dealer KILLS the best 5*.
Chrysler invented the term "Could not duplicate" My front end and steering wheel SHOOK. I mean it would oscillate back and forth 2-3 inches. Chrysler told me it was a "characteristic" of the car. Going through the Lemon Law sucked. Especially in this state, where the big 3 own the law makers, and legal eagles. But I beat them. It was 10 months of absolute bullshit. Liars and thieves at every turn. But I beat them.

RockDog! Congrats to you for standing up and
fighting. Goes to show that one person can
make a difference. If we don't fight the car
manufacturers will keep making crappy cars.
I like Chryslers only for looks. Mechanically
they suck!

I thought about buying a 300M as well. Love the room, features and look of the car as well as the positive reviews. My decision was swayed more by the feel of the car than anything else. The 300M motor is not nearly as smooth as the CL-S and there was quite a bit more wind and road noise than I expected. I came from a 7 year old V8 TBird that was fr quieter than the 300M. I could not see spending 30k for a noisier car.
Things I liked better..
The seating position was more comfortable for me than the CL-S, except for the B pillar being right next to my head.
I also think the Acura will hold its value better over the long haul. I tend to keep cars 5-7 years.

Come on all you racers out there- take one on! I KNOW you'll beat them!I had an EARLY 300M- 1999 built in April of 98 and leased in June of 98. This was BEFORE it was the Motor Trend "Car of the Year"- another JOKE like "5-STAR" Chrysler dealers! I had NO plans on getting one because I had planned on getting another supercharged Buick Riviera when the lease on my 96 Riv expired. However, those plans were shot to hell when GM decided to stop making them. They made a few 99 Rivs, but I'm sure that they're all in the GM execs garages as collector's items!
Being panic stricken, I had to immediately start a search for what my next car would be. I started driving around to different dealers. I have NO brand loyalty. I buy what I like and what I can afford. I have to SEE a car in various colors. I'm a concrete type person- can't IMAGINE what it might look like. Have to see it in person. Anyway, I passed this Chrysler dealer one Sunday. Out of the corner of my eye, this red thing caught my eye. I turned around and went back to see what it was. It must have just been delivered because it was outside the dealer's fenced in area. It was love at first sight! It was Candy Apple Red with dark grey leather interior. I loved the looks and the color. That was it. The LAST Chrysler I owned was a 1963 Chrysler 300 convertible. What did I know about Chrysler "QUALITY" or lack of it! It is the WORST car that I have EVER owned since I was 16 years old many moons ago! I wouldn't but another Chrysler product if it was the LAST car available on earth! I'd walk first! I will say, there's not many cars on the road today that look as different as the Chrysler products, but that's about it. I think my CL-S is almost as much a head-turner as my 300M was.
I agree with what rockdog says above. I do miss some of the gadgets the 300 had that I don't have on my CL-S, but I can live without them. As for the upgraded radio- 320 watt(mysteriously became 360 watt one day), 11 speaker Infinity stereo- YES, it did have more bass then the BOSE, BUT, when it was turned up, everything vibrated! The speaker in the driver's door rattled! To bring it to the "5-STAR" would have ONLY resulted in MORE aggravation, so I lived with it for 33 months and turned the bass down. I'l take the BOSE!
Anyone who is even THINKING about buying a Chrysler product needs to click on my link below to my 300M "soap opera" page and read all about Christine and all the CRAP I went through for 33 months. I got rid of it 3 months early because I did not want it in MY name when it hit 36,000 miles with NO warranty.
So far, I have 6,000 miles on my car since 3/28/01! I NEVER pile up this much mileage in such a short time, but I can't help it. I absolutely love this car! My gas mileage has NEVER been below 20MPG yet- that includes day to day driving and highway driving with AC on and off. Just came back from Keene, NH and Stamford, VT last night. Got 26.7MPG without even trying! That was going about 70-80MPH and goosing it a few times. Came home last night via the Mohawk Trail- ah..... a road made for the CL-S. Too bad it wasn't daytime because I could have really zipped around those turns, but it was raining last night and I was afraid of deer popping out in front of me!
I have no rattles, no problems and no complaints. I have a few suggestions for Acura as to improvements, but I'll be writing to them very soon. BTW, I just read in the current edition of Motor Trend that the 2002 CL-S IS getting a 6-speed. They also gave the long term results for their CL-S- NO problems or complaints! The ONLY thing I have seen my dealer for is a $9.99 oil/filter change! That's it. The next visit, I will ask about the trunk gap and the drooping muffler that seems to plague the CL and ask if there is a SIMPLE way to fix both. Anyone have these items fixed under warranty?
Well, that's my take on Chrysler and Acura. These two names cannot even be mentioned in the SAME sentence. There is ABSOLUTELY NO COMPARISON!
Come on- let's hear about someone taking on a 300M- in a SAFE fashion without endangering others. Surely someone must have a friend who has the Motor Trend "Car of the Year"!! :p
My Viper has been maintenance free for the 11 months that I have had it......but I guess if I drove it on a constant basis- I would encounter some issues.

The Viper has had very good reliability and quality. Anyone complaints about the Viper are due impart to buyers not understanding that it is no sissy. It is a brute of an automobile, and makes no bones about it. It's not meant to be quiet, comfortable, silky or refined. It's meant to tear your head off, PERIOD.

Chrysler strongest marketing tool, is that they really understand human vanity. Not one of the majors has a line up like Chrysler. They understand that people are VAIN. The first instinct is, "How will this car look on me?", "I want others to see me in this." Then they worry about price, quality, reliability. And that's why Chrysler has been so successful in the last decade. A lot of people will drop their standards to drive something that "looks good." Chrysler has had the best looking line up for a while now. No other major, has pushed the envelope of design like they have. When Chrysler redesigned their RAM truck, they did sneak previews to consumer groups. They found that just as many people loved it, as hated it. But what was more important is that those who loved the look, were "highly likely" to buy it. The Dodge Ram went from sales of 71,000 to over 350,000 in 2 years. Same goes for the PT. A lot of people HATE it. Chrysler doesn't care, they had to end 2000 production 80,000+ short. And are scrambling to find manufacturing space. I wouldn't own one because the only thing worse than a $30,000 dollar Chrysler, is a $20,000 Chrysler.
Be that as it may, because people love it, and covet it, it sells. Regardless of quality problems. You think cars made in the USA are trouble. Get a PT built in Mexico.

they probably do have a nice sound system, as the system in the dodge stratus i rented bumped more than ours...sad, isn't it?

I own a '99 300M. Overall, it's not a bad car.
Good:
Huge Backseat
Stereo is unbelievable
Moonroof works great and opens almost all the way
Autostick is fun
Downshift with autostick is comically fun on slippery snow-covered roads
Seats are comfortable for cruising long distance
Auto on/off headlights
Engine is OK
Bad:
Excessive play has "suddenly" appeared in steering wheel
Sometimes, the power windows don't work (they work the next day)
No steering wheel radio controls
300Ms are a dime a dozen nowadays
Suspension is way too soft. I can't fling this thing around corners like the engine and autostick want me to.
Seats have terrible lateral support during any type of hard maneuvering.
I never worried about brakes and brake fade in any vehicle until I drove this car.
Terrible in 12"+ snow (maybe I'm being too critical).
Quality overall is poor. I line in fear of the 36K mark.
Will I get the same car when the lease expires? NO! Will I get another Chrysler product? NO! Will I intentionally allow my hard-earned money go into the any of the big three's coffers? NO!
I test drove a CL-S, and I'm almost converted.
