CL-S Stalling on Ignition...What's Up?!?

Okay,

I have a brand new (1 week old) CL-S. Temperature in the garage is about 40 degrees. Last two mornings I turn the key and hold for a second or two, the car starts and revs to 1500 RPM. I let go of the key and and it comes down to 750 RPM and stalls immediately. I try again and hold the key for a good 3 seconds and its fine. This has happened two condecutive mornings when the car is cold. What's up?!?

I just bought my can I never staled, but it does sometime hesitate a little when it starts. I called the dealer and he told me to let the car sit in the on position and wait for about 10 sec then try it.
But i think you have a different problem. Does it completely shut off? What type of gas are you using?

I'm on my original tank of gas from the dealer. Who knows what they filled it with before they sold it to me. But, I called the service manager and asked if he was aware of this problem, and he said...NO. He sent me a fax (from ACURA Service News for delears) that is generic to all their cars. Here is an excerpt from the article he sent, and I quote:

"To fix starting problems, tell customers to crank the engine for 5 seconds without pressing the accelerator. Then if the engine still doesn't start, press the accelerator halfway down, and continue cranking until it does start. For more info on engine starting, see the owner's manual"

What is this!?!?!?! Am I starting a '78 Chevy or 2002 Acura? You've got to be kidding me!

My CLS does not need more than 2-3 cranks and it is on.
Never stalled.. But as one recommended, I wait couple sec to let built-in self test to complete before I fire it up..

This Dealer is giving you BS... This is an $30k Acura 2001!

damn...thats a lot of wear and tear on the starter. plus, our cars are fuel injected. stepping on the gas while cranking makes me think there's something else wrong w/ the engine management systems...

Don't let the dealer give you any shit. You're one week removed from their claws.....they can still smell your shampoo. Make them fix that shit for FREE, and don't let them tell you ANYTHING otherwise.

I've heard, and abide by the 1-2 second "hold in on position" prior to turn-over. Just in case and doesn't hurt anything to make sure the engine is checked and ready.

This has been addressed several times (at least twice previously by myself):

It is a cold weather issue:

The trick is to turn your car to (II) (Accessories) and let it sit there for like 4-5 seconds before you turn it to crank the car up. This gives the fuel pump enough time to start up and the car will start fine.

I do this all the time when I start up when it's cold out and it fixes the near-stall feeling that many of us experience if you just jump in the car and crank it right up.

Although I still am not sure why sometimes coming to a complete stop (like at a stop sign) will give an odd stuttering feeling as if the RPMs almost dropped low enough for it to stall. This is probably related to the start up issue though, and is also a cold weather phenomenon.

Yes, after a few seconds, the system will detect that the system is pressurized and stop. That will make sure the fuel rails are full -- this problem happens most for people that leave the car sitting around for a while and just jump at the ignition (like it was a button).

A note related to the hold the gas down, stuff. It is possible to make the car backfire if the first light off is not done for enough cranks. If you immediately smack the key right after a no-start, you can get a backfire, and it really isn't the best thing for the catalytic converter...

So, wait between restart (unless the stalker is behind you)...

This is usually due to a fooked up oxygen sensor. Needs to be replaced.

Nicky Pass,

Who is your dealer in Chicagoland? Mine claims that he has no additional info on this problem. Do you have any service bulletin number?

On a different note, a filled it up with Mobile-1 (first fill-up after the dealer's original tank) on Friday and so far so good (knock on wood)!

Which dealer did you go to, just out of curiosity???

My '02 has only once, had a hard time turning over. But after reading everyone's recommendation to turn the key to acces. II, and then crack it over, I haven't had any problems.

Sounds to me like something else it up. Especially if it is turning over and then dies. I'm no technician, so I could be completely wrong. Take it in and see what's up.

K... Just checking... I've had some issues with the dealer I went to.

See if the leaving the key in access. II for five seconds before you turn the car over helps. If you do that and it still dies, I'd have em' check it.

When I get in the car I immediately put the key in and turn it to
II. Then I fasten my seat belt and all that, and then I start
the car. Never had a problem with it.
