hey all...well i gotta give props where props are due. anyhow, i see a dropped black cl on the 60 west tonight and i decide to pace it. we end up racing a bit, but i know my 4th is stronger than the cl's 4th, but i pulled a lot to make me think the guy wasn't really racing. we got up to some pretty fast speeds. the real fun didn't start until we took the same exit (rosemead).

a nice clean white cl with kit and cf hood pulls next to me. he claims to have a cai, straight pipe, and exhaust. he wants to run, but i'm reluctant...i've got a s/c, afc, some suspension mods, and a slipping clutch. anyhow we finally catch a light. we both nail it at the same time and i heard his wheels spin a little, and i also had a little wheel hop in 1st. the cl got a .5 car lead in 1st and then it was even except in each shift he pulled .5 cars. we shut it down around 90mph and he had about a 2 car lead.

gotta say nice race whoever it was. i rarely come across cars in the same class to race with. by the way, we both had 3 ppl in our cars...as far as i could tell at least. he was a cool guy...i wish everyone i raced could be like that win or lose.

by the way...my car is running real slow...fastest was a 15.1 at fontana. too slow for a car that dyno's 241fwhp, i blame it on the clutch and the driver...hehe. i'll be getting a trd lsd and a clutchmasters stage 3 clutch...so until then...enjoy your wins over me =)

TRD solaras are nice. I knew it cant beat a CLS though, I had a TRD camry V6 and the CLS is faster definitely stock to stock.

 

yep...stock for stock from a standing start the solara is slower. but mine isn't exactly stock...the major stuff are the s/c, afc, intake, exhaust. other than that the car is setup more for road courses...my tires have too little sidewall for effective launches. anyhow...like i said, the car dyno'd 241fwhp so that would be a good race with any cl-s. by the way, mine's a 5 speed as well.

nah, i think a stock TRD solara looks wayyy sweeter than a stock CLS. First the TRD solara has body kit, nicer rims, real fogs, and if im not mistaken, a better suspension than CLS.

 

I raced my friend's Solara with super changer when I was stock and beat him 2-3 cars to 90. We did it three times and same result even the first 2 times I screwed up by hitting the rev limiter on 1st and forgot to turn off VSA so he had head start but I caught up and passed.

anyhow, was his s/c new? it takes a few hundred miles for the ecu to adjust airflow after the s/c is installed. immediately after install my solara actually felt slower. also was he 5speed or auto? auto's are about 1 sec slower in the 1/4. a 5speed with stock s/c dyno's anywhere from 220 to 230 fwhp. basically when my charger was stock, i hadn't lost to any cl-s, but i'd only raced 2 and only one of those races did we both know before hand we were about to run. either way...depending on the driver and car setup...a s/c solara and a cl-s will be close.

yeah, his was new. Just installed the weekend before. I think he had the auto, dont remember though. It's probably why I beat him easily.

Can you help me with a question...Since you have a TRD

My roommate claims he has a TRD Solara...But when I asked him why he doesn't have a body kit...he just claims he didn't want the body kit/rims...even though it SAYS "SLE" on the side

He CLAIMS there is a super charger under his hood and that it says TRD on it. He is reluctant to show me or race me for that matter, hiding behind snobbish excuses like "Racing is stupid...why do you care...modding a car is unclassy"

I'm almost positive he is bullshitting cause he claims HIS super charger has 270 HP...
Even though a real TRD only has around 250.

Can you help clarify this? Can you get a TRD supercharger without the body kit? If yes, is there another way to tell if its a TRD?

 

Welcome! I agree that your 15.1 w/241 hp is a little weak. How much torque are you putting down? You should be hitting very low 14s or high 13s. After the clutch is installed I'm sure you will be.
Is Fontana the new 1/4 mile track? How did you like it?

Ok TRD is kinda retarded. anything can be called TRD. TRD sells everything in stages. Stage 1 through 3. None of these include the supercharger. It's all apperance and suspension mods. On top of that TRD sells short shifter, and some other small items for my car. the supercharger does have TRD on it, however until recently it was sold under the Kazuma line. It's the same thing except the newer TRD ones have a dynamic belt tensioner. Same power output.

peak hp with the TRD/Kazuma s/c is about 270 at the crank. Mine was 230fwhp so factor in 15% loss it just about right. Since he has an SLE, it's auto and generates less wheel hp. The autos are about a second slower in the quarter. The fastest auto s/c solara i've ever heard of is 15.18. They'er usually in the mid 15's.

Basically, having a TRD solara does not automatically mean there's a s/c in there. The s/c is a seperate part. I only say I have a TRD Solara because mine is a limited edition on made for the 1999 toyota grand prix of long beach. Mine did not come with the s/c, I added it myself about a year after I got the car. Hope that helps.

 

Without the s/c my fastest time was a 15.8 at a track in Dallas. I was still learning how to drive stick then be careful of the camry 5speeds tho...there are two I know of in the 14.9's stock.

Fontana is the new 1/4 track. I hate it. The launch pad is about an inch higher than the track...so there's a drop off after about 60'. I saw bikes run that actually bounced...dangerous if you ask me. The left lane is absolutely ridiculous...after the 1/4 in the braking area there's a dip...i actually bottomed out and refused to run in that lane anymore.

 

man what a freakin' joke i won't bother to make the trek out there and will stay at crappy ol' carlsbad.
