the cl and acceleration

The CL Type-S is the third car i've driven on an everyday basis, and it is my first car. I was wondering if the steering wheel is supposed to like...shake when i accelerate really fast (from a stop)..basically flooring it (i think you guys call it WOT?). The reason i'm asking is because my parents cars that I drove before this, a Tahoe and a Tundra, didnt really have shaky steering wheels when I floored it (but then again, they didnt accelerate too fast either).

So yeah, basically, I just want to know if its 'normal'.

no unless you have the vsa turned off then you will get some torque steer which feels like the wheel is pulling to one side and you have to turn the wheel in the opposite direction

hmm...thats not good...i have VSA on, and when i floor it the steerwheel kinda shakes.

like if i didnt hold it pretty firmly, the car wouldnt be going anything close to straight...

what could be causing this?

check your axles, tire balance and suspension parts

First of all, what kind of shake? Does it shake like a warped rotor feel or does it pull from side-to-side. My car pulls from side-to-side when in WOT and its due to torque steer. I had a Saab 9-3 turbo and behaved the same way. Maybe torque steer will reduce with upgraded suspension? The Tahoe and Tundra are very heavy rear/four wheel drive trucks so you won't get any torque steer. Maybe it will reduce in our cars with upgrade suspension. So, to answer your question it is normal.

warped rotors will not be evident during accelleration, but would be during braking

that is true, Not blaming the rotors just comparing the shake at accerlation. But most likely its torque steer. Sorry for the confusion.

yes, its more of a pulling from side-to-side thing, it doesnt really shake at all when I brake. so its just torque steer and normal, right?

thxx for the responses

it could be your CV boots where your ends of the drive shaft are. honda's ripp / break em all the time. it causes the steering wheel to rattle and shake atleast it did on my boys integra GSR

Did it just start shaking recently or was it a gradual thing?

Could be a lot of things IMO. Torque steer is definately one. Also, your suspension. How many miles on you CL? I'm not sure, but any chance bad engine mounts will cause the car to seem like it's over steering.

35k miles, it didnt just happen recently, i think its always been like that. it only happens when i floor it, never any other time. i'm for the most part convinced its torque steer though

Define "accelerate really fast (from a stop)"... What RPM's are you at ??

If I drop the clutch on my CL at anything over 2500 rpm or so I get wheel hop... Not sure where the threshold is for the automatic CL's rpm wise...

My guess is that you're getting wheel hop with is normal on a FWD car... You have to launch the car a little more gently then a RWD tahoe or tacoma

i haven't really looked at the rpms when doing it, but it's probably from a stop to almost redline (6000+ rpms) in a few seconds (and in tiptronic if that has anything to do with it).

I have a CLS6, my lady friend has a TLP I am driving now as mine is in the shop. It is raining here now and i just got out of the ladies TLP. When I floored it a few times minutes ago from a stop it would do what you are describing until the TCS would intervene. If you only have the side-to-side pulling under hard accel from a stop you are certainly experiencing torque steer. the tires are hopping off the ground and grabbing the road and then braking traction again over and over again causing the pulling. This is torque steer. If you are experiencing this through all gears under accel. you most likely have a axle problem. My CLS6 does has wheel hop and with the softer suspension on the TLp it should be worse than the type S. I am about to change my suspension so keep an eye out.

Sounds like torque steer, I had a Saab 9-3 Turbo also, they are the absolute worst when it comes to torque steer.
