CL 6-speed vs newer Pontiac Gran Prix

Was a new looking Grand Prix, the 4 door version, 2 guys in it, was prob a 2004. I was in Maine, so it probably wasn't the GTP w/ 260 and 280lbs tourque, although from a roll, the result should have been about the same. Those are still automatics and a little heavier than the CL. We went from about 20mph to about 70, only about a 10th or two of a mile. It was in town, so we ran into traffic and had to cut it short, but I was pulling away slighly the whole time, had almost half a car length on him by the time we had to stop. I was shifting between 5 and 6,000 rpm's. Good stuff. My Trunk's debadged too, all I have is the "A" symbol, bet he didn't even know what beat him. Can't wait till I get some headers. Getting HR Sport springs installed Monday.

hey darrin...do you know the stats on the previous gen GTP vs. the new model GTP. Like an '01 vs '04 or '05 GTP? My step bro might be getting an '01 GTP...was curious how fast those things are.

Btw, good run

I dont know how fast a stock 01 GTP is, but I know they can be made to run 12s. There is a big after market for them also.

Soon you'll wonder how you lived w/out the headers.

The GTP is a low 15 car just like the CLS automatic is a low 15 car.....but in the real world everybody pretty much knows that both of these cars can hit the 14's stock more often than not. The 2 are very evenly matched stock and the GTP benefits much more from basic mods.

As for the race in this thread? I'm guessing it had to be not only a GTP but a modded GTP as there is no way in hell a stock GTP is going to hang with a CLS 6-speed from a roll. GTP's are tough from a stop with alot of torque but their weakness, at least stock, is from a roll.

I don't know man, this is Maine, not too much excess and flashy modded cars here. It was a really brief race, one of those deals where I saw them earlier, they looked game, 1/2 hour later was making the turn to go over this short 4 lane bridge, and there they were, in the left lane, I gunned it, they were keeping up so they were obviously in for it, they just never made up any ground and lost almost half a car length. I was shifting @ 5-6000, so might have done better at redline, but it was a really short sprint. the difference between a mid 14 and a mid 15 isn't going to be a win by a whole bunch of car lenghts car anway. Thanks for the props and speculating it could have been a modded GTP , I know I'm not Mario Andretti.

So the fact that it is Maine means that GM didn't sell any GTP's in that state?

Sorry, I just thought that was funny.

The car obviously must have been a GTP as a 6-speed CLS would absolutly destroy an NA 3800 any day of the week.

Well, maybe it was, there just aren't a lot of wealthy people in central Maine, a lot of people are just getting by.......... so besides the racing it's more likely it was just the GT, hell, there isn't even an Acura dealer in the whole state......

Really?? I know there are a shitload of SAAB's around here, I see more Saab's here in Maine than anywhere else I've been.

I actually saw a 2000+ GTP today, at the police station, so it might have been one. He was keeping up pretty good, but had half a car on him at the end.........w/ 230HP and 280T it should be pretty close to a 6 speed CL, could prob go either way.
