Chunks missing on the tire tread?

Anyone experience seeing pieces of the rubber missingon the outside tread? I'll post pics when I get the chance...but I have the stock tires and I notice that the tread is not really wearing right but small chunks are missing (not deep, but deeper than the rest of the tread on the tire. It only happens on the front tires. Are they inflated properly (under or over inflated?...although they are at the recommended pressure) or am I taking corners too hard? (I drive pretty conservative though)...or do the tires just plain suck? (shouldn't be that cheap, should they?)

I'll try to post pics after work today...but anyone notice this on their stock tires?

yes, my stock tires are doing this as well. I have about 36k miles on them.

Excess wear on the shoulder of the tire can come from hard cornering or low inflation pressure.

Do you mean that your tire is wearing in a cupped or scalloped fashion? This can indicative of a variety of problems to the wheel suspension -- from bearing problems, tire mounting problems, strut or other suspension problems.

if gsrblack is experiencing the same thing I am, it isn't cupping - my tires are evenly worn across the tread face. it's just the outer shoulders look like they had gravel imbedded in them at one time - almost like little craters.

with respect to my tires, I think it's a combination of age and ozone...

I think what I have is similar to tank's description...it's not really bad, but where the slits in the outer tread are, it seems like the rubber has been picked off. Will try to post pics later on tonight.

I had experience the same problem, on the peremeter treads only right? I have about 28k on them and i think it's from heavy acceleration on uneven road or on loose gravel type roads. Our stock tires are quite soft even though it is H rated and the wear it decent the tread itself seems weak, and succetible to bubbling side walls too.

I've replaced my tires last week so i hope these Contis are better.

and if you corner hard AND have low pressure, not good .. I corner hard on the stock michelins and have exactly what your describing gsrblack. but I have my pressure jacked up to 38 front, 35 back. I like to push them to the limits tho .. my CT sways, springs, and tokico shocks make me

I have the same problem on the original tires for my 03 CLS6. I have 29300 miles on them and most of the tread however I like to occasionally spin the crap out of them and rip through some corners with understeer in full effect. THIS IS THE CAUSE. Nothing wrong with the tire. It is strictly from abuse. Ask any tire expert. I guess the compound is so hard that it just breaks off on the stock all seasons Mich’s.

My opinion,
Jim
