Checkout your Navi

I just notice today that my Navi is acting strangely. Struggling to stay on course. Most of the roads here are straight and parallel but not close together side by side. But my "red arrow" is shifting and swaggering and doing hook-slides. And it's tilted alot like I'm slip-sliding. Also it's taking awhile to get oriented when I do a 180.

Is this happening to anyone else? Could the Gvt be manipulating the satellites...perhaps turned SA back on? Are we going to war?

ill check later.

but even when SA was turned off I didnt notice increased performance i my navi... so I doubt thats it.

As long as the car can get a relative position once in awhile from the satellite the software does a good job at guesstimating from the gyros/etc.

But they could make the system even less accurate then it was before SA was turned off... that could fuck ya up pretty bad.

But I don't think they can do that without letting people know. Would fuck up alot of commercial shit no?

Interesting nonetheless... ill play with er later.

i was thinkin bout it too...

i dont think OUR GPS would be affeted in the event of war... the military has the ability to turn the civilian signal off in specific regions...

so they would just disable it in the gulf.

also... i think alot of the navigation shit in those 3rd world countries use the Russian GPS system.

The only benefit of degrading the signal over the US would be if they were worried about some foreign guided missiles flying over the US.

Lets assume thats not the case. lol

kensteele,

Yes! I noticed the same exact things happening last week. I was taking a trip down to the cabinet makers in Paterson, NJ, and the Navi had a hard time keeping course. Plus, the icon was a bit sideways at times....very strange.

But the very next day, I used the Navi again for a similar trip down in Jersey, and the Navi was back to normal.

Weird.

soopa,

I learned soooo much about our Navi system over the last few months.....

It seems that our system relies MUCH more on the vehicle speed sensor and internal gyro sensors to fix a position than the satellite signals, like you said.

I'd bet that the system could easily track a vehicle that lost it's satellite signal completely in an area that isn't too densly populated (with streets) for quite a long time.

I remember back in my CL days, driving thru the Lincoln tunnel and watching the icon track along the tunnel with ZERO satellite signal. It was perfect.

Ken,

Ya, mine has been doing the same thing for the past 2 weeks. Wonder how often are we suppose to recalibrate the unit? If ever. I should check the owners manual. I bet your right, however there are many GPS birds up in the sky. Maybe it is a precaution.

Mine has done the same thing in the past... but it tends to fix itself after I turn the car off for a while.

I tried pulling over, turning the car off, and then back on, but that didn't help.

But after reaching my destination and leaving the car off of a couple hours, it was back to normal.

Hope you have the same experience.

I just talk to a friend of mine who works at Garmin as an Engineer. He told me that they turn SA back on right after 9/11. In the last month they have been making of false readings from the satellite from +/- 5% to +/- 15%. Which will fuck with pretty much every navi system and gps. The guys know what he is talking about, and I don't think he would lie to me about this information.

This is a good article about SA for those who are interested in GPS.

This website probably has everything you ever wanted to know about GPS.
