Changing Oil

I use Mobil Super Synthetic for only 4k now. I want to switch over to Valvoline cause I heard it was better. Can I do that?

Also I still have a botle of Mobil left can I mix them.

No problem with the mix. I frequently use the Valvoline brand and it does a good job.

Which Valvoline are you switching to? I'd let leave the Mobile 1 in until 7-10,000 miles (it is a really good oil). YMMV

Should we use 5w30 as the manual states, or should we use 10w30? Whats the diff between 30/40?

I dont know why you would use 5W-20 that grade is to thin for hot areas such as Texas and southern states. I use 10w-30 synthetic and sometimes 5w-40 Valvoline synthetic.

I noticed that too, The oil cap in the engine says 5w-20 but the manual says 5w-30. I'm not sure which one to use either.

Honda Motors specifies all their 2003 models to use 5w-20. The only reason is to increase the mileage of their cars, so it looks good on paper to the Feds. However, this is done at the expense of the life span of the engines. I don't see how you can get adequate protection in the summer in Texas, Arizona, etc. The increasd wear and tear will not show up immediately. The susequent owners are the ones will pay for it

Really...which one to use?

You have to pick what's best for you,, I use Amsoil with their filter,,, I also sell it so I can get it wholesale,,, I did a test on my car,,, I went 10k miles on Amsoil and then sent it to the lab,,, results came back very positive,,, they said just change the filter and keep the oil in there. This was enough data for me to change oil every 10k but I still change the filter every 5k. Note filters are very much different, cost doesn't mean your getting a good filter,, read here,,

http://www.ntpog.org/reviews/filters/filters.shtml

I am from the old school of changing oil every 3k soooo this 10k thing is new to me but seems to be working out,,, note I drive 90-100 miles daily, mostly highway,, Also Amsoil is the only Co. thats tests and promotes extended oil changes,,

more fun reading here,,,

http://www.amsoil.com/performancetests/sequence_3f.htm

Also mobil1 is very good, but they want you to change every 3k,, ???? they know how to make alot of money,,,

I'm a Aeronautical Engineer with a failure analysis back ground, I work with all types of labs soooo the above type of test are very common to me,,, some on this board will say they are biased when they are run by amsoil,,, ok ASTM is ASTM,,,
