Change your transmission fluid!!

Change your transmission fluid!!
I just had the 15k service done at an independent Honda/Acura shop. They changed the transmission fluid and WOW. My slushbox feels less slushy. The wheels feel more connected to the engine. I don't know if it was low or what, but it feels better now.

You will notice that Acura recommends that only Honda ATF be used. It states that in an emergency Dexron can be used, but to drain and refill ASAP with Honda ATF. I called Acura Technical Services to see what the exact specs were for Honda ATF. I was told that Honda ATF contains special friction modifiers that other brands do not and that using anything else but Honda ATF would affect shift quality and feel. Being a fan of Mobil 1 products and thinking I was being fed the corporate line, I called Mobil Technical Services to see what they had to say.
To my great surprise I was told the same thing by the Mobil 1 tech. He said that Mobil 1 recommends against using their ATF in any Honda product. He said that the way manufactures are designing transmissions today, the days of one or two types of universal ATF are numbered and that soon each manufacturer will have their own special ATF with just the right blend of additives to work with their own transmission design.

$115 for the whole thing. And they use genuine Honda/Acura everything. Someone here had the dealer get them for $170 for a 7500mi service. Ouch!

Don't skip that service. My car is so much better now...They alligned the tires, rotated the tires, changed tranny fluid, eye balled all fluids, tightened up steering joints etc.....They really do a long list of things I believe are needed for longivity of your car ! I bought a 1998 Accord coupe v6, took it ONLY to the dealer by the book, the car still runs like new and I have had NO problems with it. When I was younger and not wise, I bought a new 91 Honda Civic SI, ran the hell out of it and NEVER took it in and I had major problems when I reached 90K, tranny went out, clutch was gone the list goes on and on. Besided, when you find a GOOD Service dealer, stick with them, build a long term relationship, so when something goes wrong, they will worship you...trust me ! The Honda dealership rolls the red carpet to me EVERYTIME I arrive and address'me as though I am a diplomat !

My Humble Opinion:
Never skimp on the fluid changes.
BTW, they now make sticks to check your coolant (to see if it is ok or not).
I had my Maxima's Auto tranny ATF replaced often *and* had the dealer use one of the new "flush" systems to purge the transmission of any old varnish, etc left by the old ATF. After that change, the ATF was so clean, that I had trouble seeing the color on the dip stick.
My opinion: If you keep all of the fluids clean like:
Brake fluid, engine oil, coolant, ATF, etc, your car will thank you. It is cheap insurance.

To add to those fans of Mobil 1, I believe that Mobil manufactures ATF and engine oil for Honda/Acura. The ATF that is supplied is obviously to specs layed down by Honda/Acura, but I believe the oil is regular Mobil 5W-30. I can't wait for Acura to switch to synthetics, hope that's soon.
