CF Hood owners

Hey guys...I just recently put on a vis cf hood I bought from silverbuilt here on the boards. Question for everyone out there with a hood....what do you guys use as a hood prop? I have no idea what to use to prop up the hood when i wanna work on the car...any ideas would be great. I was thinking of using something like the accord's hood props but im not sure those would work. Thanks guys

Use a broom stick. Why didn't you use the oem hood struts? Works for me.

what are you laughing about? you can't use the oem hood struts on a CF hood genius...

shinyblue- i saw your ride around uci the other day, nice work... i just recently put my hood on too and the shop custom fabbed something to prop up my hood. it reminds me of the way my friend props up his ITR hood vertically 90 deg... but it works...

Thanks for the compliment. I guess I am a genius, because I am using my oem struts on my carbon fiber hood. It's amazing what a little metal, welding, and fabrication will do. I built a sub-frame that holds the hood. The struts attach to the sub-frame.

Oh, I was laughing about using the broom stick on a high tech hood, and I love tomatoes, thanks .

the VIS hood weighs 19lbs. i would guess the stock hood weighs in the 30's.

i'm using the factory hood struts right now w/ mine. you just have to be extra careful when you open and close it.

clswhite/mattg- can you each post pics of how the stock struts held ur cf hood?

i was told that the original struts don't fit and that's why they had to construct the set-up on my car...

Post some pics and show him how it's done. All the ones I have seen, they use some bar to keep it up, maybe not a broom stick.

As soon as weather permits and I can borrow a digital camera, I will post some pics.

It is easier and cheaper to use a prop rod which is why you have not seen anything else. I am not a rocket scientist or a genius , and I figured a way around the stupid prop rod. I lived with a 1988 Integra for 13 years with a prop rod. way was I going to put a high tech hood on my '01 CL-S and use a low tech prop rod.

More tomatoes please! Yummy.

thanks my hood does have the things where you can attach the oem struts too...but i was told that using the oem struts would warp the hood eventually and thats why i took them off. matt, so you have had no problems using the stock struts on your hood? A lot of people have told me not to use it....so i'm kind of hesitant

I removed my fiberglass hood (clearance issue) and put my stock back on for now.
The following numbers were observed when I put both on scale:

Stock hood - 41lbs
Aerogear 'predator' - 14lbs

i also just called MOBworks the guys that painted/installed my hood and they said too that using the stock struts would eventually warp the carbon fiber shape and that's why they installed a prop separate from the stock one for me.

41 pounds is pretty significant, sounds like a good performance mod !
