New to this forum, just signed in. Recently acquired a 2001 CLS with 24k miles, Carfax verified. Very early car, purchased in 2000 by a then 71 year old male.
White, tan interior, spoiler, chrome wheels. Interesting story that I will relate if there is any interest.

Anyway, when I viewed pictures of this car I noticed drilled rotors front and back. I thought that someone had the rotors drilled. Then I found a few ads for cars with factory front drilled rotors. Most of the cars I find for sale are not drilled. Is this something that Acura did on the early CLS cars and then discontinued?

If anyone can enlighten me on this subject I would be most appeciative.

PS: I have found the CL's and especially the S series cars to be a great value in a personal performance car.

 

Only 24 K miles on the sucker!! I wish mine only had that many, that is gonna run for a while. As far as I know I havent heard of any of the CL's coming with slotted and drilled rotors? You did go with the best choice for performance out of Acuras lineup, post some pics, hell!!!

 

I haven't heard of factory drilled rotors.

I'm positive that the CL never came with slotted or cross-drilled rotors from the factory. The previous owner must of upgraded the brakes. Nice color choice, white's pretty rare. As for the mileage, I wish I could've found one with mileage that low. Good luck with it and welcome to Acurazine!

 

Nope, factory rotors weren't drilled... But alot of owners upgade to aftermarket rotors since the front OEM ones warp easily (mine just did at 60K miles).

Thank you for the comments, yes I am 74, and the gentleman that owned the car purchased the car at 71 years of age and relinquished ownership at 78 years of age. I have been a car nut since I was 12 - 13, also motocycles. I have owned Corvettes, Pantera's, Dodge 426 Hemi drag race car, lots of hot Chev's, and other cars. Had a 41 Willys coupe with a Buick V/8 in it. Go back quite a ways. So I am the oldest member, damn

I love the list of previously owned cars. Wow, a 41 Willey's with a Buick V8, huh? That must have been something! Can't wait to see some picts of your CL.

BTW, cars will always be one of those interest that has no age limit. I think it's awesome that you're still into performance cars. Truly inspirational.

Really have not decided what I will do to the CL-S I just purchased. I think my racing days are over at 74. And what I hear about the automatics in the CL's makes me a bit nervous about boosting the HP.

I saw a few CL's with the front, side, and rear aero kits that look rather neat. So I may just keep it stock, and dress it up a bit.

Being an old fart, I had the opportunity to own some really neat cars. I sold my Hemi car to Jay Leno, and a couple of years ago I sold my 65 Corvette FI roadster. I counted all the cars I had owned down through the years a few years ago and I believe it was around 86 plus or minus a few. Cars were cheap in the old days, I remember you could purchase a new FI hipo short block from GM for $240. Anyway you guys probally think I am telling you fish stories, BS. I wish I still had some of the cars I sold, now they are worth a lot of money.
But I had the enjoyment of driving, racing, and owning them.

I find it difficult to get under cars any longer, getting old is not nice. A bit of trivia for you, Craig Breedlove the former world land speed record holder belonged to my old hotrod club, "The Igniters, Of Culver City" We get together, the Igniters that is twice a year, and Craig usually shows up at one of the bashes. He just sold the new jet car he was building to a guy going after a new world land speed record. Hope I have not bored you guys with all the
old stuff.

The old guy that previously owned my CL- S was 78 when he gave the CS to his grandson who promptly traded it in on a new Chev pickum up. The car sat on the lot for quite awhile
in a neighborhood where pickum ups were the only way to go. The clowns at the Chev dealer did not even clean the car up. When I went to see it, it had not been washed or detailed. They had washed it at one time in the sun and it had left streaks in the paint, and the wheels though chrome stockers were filthy dirty. The car was almost out of gas, so I was afraid to drive it too far for fear it would run out of go juice.

I had traveled 60+ miles to get there and was really pissed at them. I did not buy the car, but kept calling the fololowing week to check on it giving different names. I finally called the sales manager and said I would like to see the car again, but clean the damn thing up and put some gas in it so that I could get it on the freeway and check it out.

When I got down there on a Sunday afternoon they had at least washed it, and it had 1/2
tank of gas. The interior was mint, the paint needed to be buffed out, but there were no rock chips in the paint or windshield, and a small dent in the left front fender that I am going to have one of the dent removers take out for me.

Drove the car, quiet, tight, fast, shifted smoothly, all the manuals were in the car, along with a copy of a $1000 service policy the guy purchased when he bought the car. The dealers name where the car was originally purchased was on the warranty along with the original owners name address and phone number. Tried to call the old guy, but the phone has been disconnected, he may have passed on? I am going to search further to see if he is still alive and kicking

So I bought it and have been detailing it out, does not look like the same car I purchased and runs like a top. All rotors have been drilled, and the brakes are 65 front 75 rear.
Even though the oil looked fresh, I changed it to Mobil 1, 5/30. The trans fluid looks clean and fresh so I will probably wait until the 30K mile service to go through and flush and refill
everything. Underneath the car it looks brand new. I will most likely steam it underneath to clean off the dust.

The only real problem I have found with the car, is the old guy who had it, kissed a curb with the right side and nicked the chrome wheels. I have talked to an outfit in LA that refinishes wheels and he has given me a price on replacing the two wheels. They are not that bad, but it is such a nice car it deserves to have the wheels replaced.

When I took delivery of the car it had 23,878 miles on it. It now has 24,4xx miles showing.

Anyway, now you know the whole story.

Nightrider, I have been following Auto trader recently, and in LA there is a black/black 2003
CL-S (6 speed car) with 37K miles, asking price 13.5K. Also saw a black/ black 2003 CL-S (auto) with 26K miles but it was somewhat more money. Re the 2001 car that I purchased, it is the lowest milage CL-S car I have found in any of the trhree years offered. Most likely because of the mans age that bought it.

At my age I have had time the time to do a few things LOL. Hopefully you will have the time also.

Acura automatic transmission debacle

Just read the Acura automatic transmission saga, wow it really is depressing. I really like the car and knew that there were issues with the automatics but not to the extent of failures owners are experiencing. If I had known fully the problems regarding the automatics I do not believe I would have purchased my car. And it does not sound as if it will be resolved by Honda.

Like I said above, my racing days are over, but the trans problem appears to manifest itself in normal driving. Anyone interested in a 24000 mile 2001 CL-S? Car appears fine, but can I depend on it? What a shame such a neat little car can have this kind of history. Now I know why the 6 speeds are in demand.

your car is probably under the extended acura 100k warranty, so i wouldn't worry about it tooo much.

to find out, you can register your vehicle with the VIN # at the acura site: http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com, and then click "Recalls." It should tell you whether or not your car is under the recall.

Thanks for the input, I will do that. I rather doubt that it is though, as the car is a very early car. The car was sold to the original owner March 2000. He purchased the warranty program, 7 years which expired March of this year. I spoke to the Acura dealership, and they said that because of the low milage of the car Honda would most likely give me a break on the cost of a new tranny. He said another of his customers had one installed and they charged him $700 for a new one.

The car I bought is like new, tight, quick, and a plaesure to drive. I really like the car, and so far the tranny performs like new. I do not even feel it shift. But the horror stories I read really did a number on my head. I saw an 03, 6 speed listed in auto trader with 39K miles and missed it by a week. If I find another that appears to be a good by I may go that route. Thanks for your post.

 

your welcome. my 01 CL's warranty had already expired when the original owner i purchased the car from sold it to me, but it's still eligible for the recall. can't hurt to take 5 minutes to register your car and find out for sure. it'll at least give you a peace of mind.

 

Took your advise and registered my car this AM, it does not appear to be covered.
One of the problems, well not really a problem is that the car is very low miliage, 24500 at present and is running fine. Tranny is positive, quiet, does not leak, shifts smoothly, Trans fluid is clean, so it may go many more miles before it gives up the ghost. So if I keep the car which I will unless I find a nice low milage 6 speed I will most likely be past the warranty period and have to pay something.
For a brand new tranny, $700 does not seem too bad if Honda will install a new one for that price.

I do thank you for your suggestion re registration of the car, and taking the time to try and help. Good luck with your car and it's tranny. //Carl
