Cai

Guys i have a 03 tl s type, I'm looking at intake options, I will be putting on headers, high flow cat, and thermal spacers on the intake, maybe in time a 3.7 intake manifold. I will be removing the front bumper cover in a few weeks and figured I may as well do my intake while I'm there. From what I have found searching around the Ice box is the best but know longer available, then would be AEM/Injen and there is always the resonator removal. Just looking for a little in site as to what these cars like in particular. More noise does not bother me but my rule has always been if its loud it better be fast, so performance is more important. These cars not haveing a MAF makes a CAI a lot simpler, it a single tube with a few bends. I have found a name brand knock off on ebay(not a big fan) but being this is a simple piece it could be just as effective with a good air filter. The ebay unit is listed at 2.75" pipe which seems small for the displacement and power out put but i have not found any diminutions for the name brand guys. Any knowledgeable in site would be appreciated thanks.

I just have a dumb question? The resonator is what is below the air filter right? I have AEM cai and I think I can see it. I want to remove this to get better air flow to my cai?

I am not sure if the TLS is any different from the CLS, but on my manual I am using an AEM, which bends down behind the bumper and I have opened the fake air intake and it works very well and only adds a little in noise, but a good noise..

Yes the resonator is below the air box/ right in front of the wheel. They are the same on a CL as on a TL. You would have to remove the resonator to install a CAI. If its still in your car then you have a short ram intake (not as good because it is sucking hot air from the engine bay) but you should remove the resonator to help with air flow.

The fake air intake? are you talking about the vents in the bumper? I was noticing it doesn't look like air can flow through those well.
Thanks though I will have to remove mine very soon and yes I just have a short ram intake, id like a better one though..
Edit LoweredCL! how do you like your XS headers? I was about to order those but I don't know how they hold up. I was told I should get the flex pipe reinforced before I installed them. Have you had any problems?

I would say 2.75" is too small. I would stick with something 3"-4". I have used the icebox for the last 9 years and am very happy with it. I have an extra one for manual.

I was looking at the airraid u-build-it kits. They send you different length and angled plastic tubes and you assemble it how you want it. They have a 3", 3.5", and a 4". You just use a silicone reducer to connect it to the tb.

You could always buy metal tubing and build your own by welding or just using couplers.

Thank 03 tls nc, but ill probably just buy one around her since im all the way in Kentucky. I think I have seen AEM long cai for about $180.
Another question though, to take out my resonator I have to take off the fender and fender well right?

No intake work requires removing fender or fender trim. All you do is open the hood.

Ok i haven't t really looked at it. The resonator looks like it is hard to get to because it is so low.

Let me know if you want to sell your extra ice box.

You can pull the resonator with out removing the fender, just pull the inner finder back out of the way I believe there is only to bolts holding it in then it will pull down and out. Its tight but can be done and if you have the s type you are in luck because it's smaller. You could do that now since you will have to remove it when ever you put a CAI any ways. If you can score an ice box get it they are no longer made and not that easy to find.
