CAFE standards: Does it work? is it for real?

Under the current corporate average fuel economy - or CAFE - program, SUVs and other light trucks must meet an efficiency target of at least 20.7 miles a gallon, while passenger vehicles face a requirement of at least 27.5 miles a gallon. With SUVs' share of the auto market growing rapidly during the past decade, environmental groups and some lawmakers have called for end to this so- called SUV loophole.
Is it really our cars does 27.5MPG on the average? Even if we say do all Acura lineup have an average 27.5 MPG? I doubt it!

Cafe is a joke. If the manufactures don't make cafe they just pay a fine and then pass that cost on to the buyers. Did you know that if you have a speedo in excess of 85 mph you paid a fine for that too?

Yes they work and yes they are real. The joke is that SUV's are considered trucks! I would guess that Acura is a tad over the target, but Honda is way under it.. YMMV

Oh please! Cafe changes with each different administration. If we had stuck to the original passing we'd be near 37 mpg corporate average fuel economy. And we'd also have no SUV's and performance cars. Cafe has been changed more times than the tax code. It's changed to reflect what the consumer wants and the auto makers want to build rather than what it was originally designed for.

Manufacturers also borrow against future production... It is a corporate average, so for cars, they just have to average all their production to meet it, if they can't, they pay a fine, or borrow from past years where they were well under, or borrow from future years where they predict they will be well over... the fines are really hefty actually... so they try to shy away from paying them, or having them imposed. Also trucks have a joke of a standard, I don't think they have an average, but the restrictions/regulations are getting tighter which sucks for manufacturers.

My 2 cents!
