A/C Problem..Suggestions Please

Last summer my A/C stopped working. The compressor continously cycled on/off abnormally and didn't cool at all. I recharged and let all the old stuff vent out and didn't have any more problems until now. My A/C started with the same symptoms, cycling on/off continously, except the compressor stopped coming on altogether. I tried the same fix as last year and still the compressor didn't come on. I bypassed the switch to force the compressor on and kept it on for a bit and still nothing. I don't know too much about A/C systems so since last week i've been driving with no A/C. I know taking my car to an A/C shop is going to cost an arm and a leg that i can't afford so i thought maybe someone here could help. If i haven't provided enough info let me know what info is missing and i'll try to get it. Thanks in advance. It's really hot here and just getting hotter.

You let all the A/C coolant vent into the air?

My 1G was doing the same thing, cycled on and off. Turned out to be the pressure switch, not something you want to DIY ( requires purge and fill ). Sometimes, you're just better off taking it to a qualified shop.

Yeah unfortunately A/C systems can be tricky and releasing it into the air is def not a good idea. I was lucky enough to still have my extended warranty when my compressor went out a couple years ago. <saiko_cl_duck> is right, it could be a pressure switch, or a lot of things. My first thought was the clutch, but you said you bypassed it. There are so many little things that work together, it sucks, but you should really take it to a shop and have it looked at. Call around and ask for quotes on a diag first, then compare prices and be aggressive. Some places will price match to get your business. But don't skimp to some no-name shop unless they have a rep. I see to many hack jobs come in where people got taken advantage of and we have to charge them more money to fix a problem we could have done right the first time for less. Good luck.

Mine was doing the same thing. I added die to it and a couple of days later the compressor stop kicking in even when I hit the AC button. Turns out I have a leak for the casing FML!
