Buying used Comptech headers...bad idea?

I'm reallllllllllly debating whether or not to buy some used Comptech headers. One guy says he had them on his car from the time he bought it (new) and took them off at 36k miles. He's sellin em at a good price, however I don't know if its a bad idea to buy used headers or not? Are there ANY con's in doing so? Will they be ANY different from if they were new (besides the color change)? I don't want to throw on crap shit on my car you know, since I just bought her and I want to make sure I do things right with it. Please give me any info/details on the Pro's and Con's of going with a used Comptech header. Also, if I don't have any other engine mods, will the increase still be around 30hp? I have an 01 CL-S. Thanks

`John

Mine were used, still perfect, just make sure you get the gaskets.

Don't worry about the Comptech Headers - just buy new exhaust manifold gaskets from the dealer (stock ones).

If i were to do it again i'd have no problem buying used Comptech headers. 36k miles ain't nothing.

If you can get'em at a good price, buy em.

Used CT headers = worry free (of course as long as they are not beat the fuck up or cracked)

Comptech does NOT give you a new gasket. When putting on new headers it is always best to put on NEW gaskets. Remember Honda's V6 uses the same gaskets (ie same part number) as Acura's V6 many times it is cheaper to get them from a Honda dealership.

wait, so if I were to buy used comptech headers from somebody, I would also have to buy new exhaust manifold gaskets from the dealer (stock ones)? Stock ones as in, for the stock manifold? Is that necessary, and how much are they?

USed ct headers = new ct headers in my book ...

comptech knows how to build a great product ... hence the $1200 up front cost

All you need are the 3 o-rings for the manifolds to down pipe and down pipe to cat connections. The manifold to head gaskets are just thin pieces of stainless and are re-usable. The o-rings shouldn't cost much. The o-rings are the same as the stock ones.

Well they crush when they are installed so they might leak. They are only about $4 ea. at acuraautomotiveparts.org.

You will need 2 #9 and one # 16. Actually I think they are all the same on the Comptechs so you might just get 3 of the #9 ones.

my buddy used all his stock gaskets for the front/rear headers and used three new o-rings from Comptech and has been fine. no leaks... no power loss, etc.

don't waste your money on new header gaskets .. they're a rip off from Acura -- $50.00 for both .. ugh...

I bought my Comptech headers used recently and I haven't had any regrets! They fit great and the extra horsepower is definitely noticeable up high.

I sold my Comptech headers before i sold my car. I had mine for 20K miles and to my surprise they looked new when i took them out to sell them. They are top notch quality and i would buy a used set with no worries. Good luck.

everybody, thanks for all the replies, I truly appreciate it

well I'm nearly 100% sure I'm pickin some up this coming week, so I'll def let everybody know how everything went. So is the concensus that I should or shouldn't get new gaskets?

`John

p.s. the headers I'm going to get were used for 9k miles, not for 36k, if that means anything??

CT headers will no doubt (new or used) outlast the ownership of the car... i am very confident in that.

The crush o-ring gaskets should be available at any muffler shop or decent auto parts store.

Don't worry about the manifold gasket as it will be fine.

Bought mine about a year and 1/2 ago. Bought the manifold gasket (set of 2) and needed the 3 o-ring crush gasket for the piping.

Word of caution tho.. it's kind of a bitch with some of the fittings. As new as my car was (< 6 monts at the time) the flange bolts were frozen solid. Impact wrench was worth its' weight in gold--both on the upper and lower flanges.

Also, some of the 10mm (?) header to manifold nuts were a bitch to torque. Had to do some creative extensioning.

But the headers were great though. They had some slight scratches but they "work" great. Best power increase available for the $!

Good luck.

ok so, I bought used CT headers off of Satin Slayer just the other day and will be gettin em in the next 2 weeks. I need to know if I need new gaskets or new o-rings, or both? It seems to be 50/50 on here. I need a GOOD consensus! Thanks!

O-rings yes. Gaskets no. The gaskets on the manifold where it bolts to the head are just thin stainless steel. Not a wear item and not something that gets damaged when you remove it. As long as they don't get bent or anything they should be fine. The O-rings crush when you bolt the flanges together and should be replaced.

I would only buy the gasket if your car has more than 10k on the clock. I used the same gasket but my car only had 1400 miles on it at the time and the tech at Acura did not see any damage on the gasket.

I bought mine used. Haven't had a problem in a year. As long as there are no cracks, or dents in them they should last the life of the car.
