brake fluid ..should I change?

Whats up everyone...

I'm getting some new rotors and pads put on at a local brake shop. They said they would only charge $7 per rotor to surface and only $29 to put them on since I'm bringing my own. Should I also go ahead and have the brake fluid changed? Perhaps to something like Motul? If so, how much of it do you need to order? I see on autocarparts they sell the .5 liter bottles...or should I get Redline????

Thanks

IIRC, the manual suggests that brake fluid be replaced every three years, regardless of mileage.

I'm not sure of the advantages of the DOT4 over DOT3 brake fluid for a regular street driven car.

DOT4 fluids are more expensive, but have higher dry and wet boiling points, and are slightly less hydroscopic then DOT3.

You can use either 3, 4, or 5.1 DOT fluid. My other car has Motul 5.1 fluid (as will this one when I get my Rotora BBK installed). Can you really tell on daily driving? No. But when you're hard braking the car several times, you'll notice a difference in feel, when brake fluid starts to reach it's boiling point, the pedal will feel softer and softer. 5.1 prevents that, plus the life of 5.1 is much longer.

Hi Nite,

Since I do a lot of braking from commuting everyday, it will probably benefit me to get the Motul 600 fluid then? How much should I order for the shop to do the replacement?

2 bottles should be good for a full flush. Most of the 1st bottle will go through once they start bleeding the old stuff out, that's when the 2nd bottle comes in handy.

1 bottle = 1 L for reference

I should add, when I flushed my system in my VW, I required two bottles. For the CL, I'm unsure, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Plus, if you get brake fluid in a metal can (ATE for example), the shelf life is 2+ years usually v. plastic bottles (a few months).

Not DOT 5

Without running out to the car and looking in the owner's manual myself, I think I remember it saying DO NOT USE DOT 5 brake fluid. The DOT numbers relate to different specifications and formulations, not just performance upgrades. Do yourselves a favor, and don't trust anyone else's recommendation (including mine). Look this up for yourself. Using the wrong DOT number brake fluid can be a very serious mistake in the long term...

Ummmmm, if you read carefully, maybe you'll get it....

there is a FREAKING HUUUUUGE difference between 5.1 and 5.

You CANNOT use 5 with DOT 3/4 systems. 5.1 is compatible with all DOT 3/4 systems.

I never said to use DOT 5 fluid.... ONLY 5.1
