Brake bleeding problem? ABS Bleed?

Ok I was all stoked to post up with my latest mod and I can't even bleed my damn brakes! I know the procedure to bleed them, I even tried the opposite. I took the calipers off and did new SS lines when putting the calipers back on. I bleed the system the and pedal is rock hard, I turn the car on and loose the pedal. WTF am I missing? I've heard that I may need to bleed the VSA/ABS system. Is there a procedure? Is this true? I can't find anything on doing this... I find it hard to believe that the master cylinder went bad cause I had the calipers off. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The pedal is very stiff when the master cylinder looses vacuum. When you start the car, the pedal is easy to apply again. Imagine trying to stop the car with that rock hard pedal, it takes a lot of force to slow the car down.

I understand that it shouldn't stay as hard as when the car is off, but it goes way too soft when the car turns on. When driving its too soft. I don't get anything till the end of the pedal.

Update...

Ok so after numerous bleeds the pedal still didn't come back. tested some stuff and put in a new master. Pedal is better, and after driving a lot its getting a little better. Could there just be that much air in the system?

I bleed the brakes with the car running, that way the vacuum system is operating normally and I can get the most air out of it.

It also helps to bench bleed the new components to limit the amount of work once on the car.
