Which Big brake upgrade

Alright, I know that there are many threads onthis subject, I been reading all of them and performed a few searches but i still have not decided.

I want a Big Brake upgrade that

1. Fits the stock 03 CL-S 17" wheels.
2. Is black in color because I don't want to call attention to my car.
3. The company offer an upgrade for the rear rotors and calipers.
4. I never had to use the spare tire, but if I have to buy a full spare with rim then that is OK but I need to know in order to keep a functional spare.

On #1, I know that the Rotora's kit fit with 5mm spacer, however, I seem to remember that they do not sell their kit in anything but red or blue. If that is true, then my #2 criteria is out the window.

Additionally, I don't know if they sell anything for the rears.

On #2, I know that the Willwood's kit is in black. I also know that there is a thread that talks about a custom fit for the CL-S. From what I read it does not say if that was ever completed or if it was done for the stock wheels. Also, do they sell anything for the rears.

On #3, I heard that there was a full setup from Willwood, I don't know for sure what that set up is. if there is a full set up from Rotora then maybe I will rethink my #2 (black color).

On #4, As said if I have to buy a full rim and tire for the spare tha is OK. But i must keep a functional spare. I don't want my wife to drive the car and find herself with a blown tire and no spare.

thanks in advance for the suggestions and pictures are very well appreciated.

First, Rotora only makes RED or BLUE... you can get the fronts powdercoated black for an extra $700.00 from them.., but that is the truth..

Just take the new calipers and send them out to be repainted if your that concerned about it... I will be doing that this winter..

Sencondly.. You will need a full size spare, but only for the Fronts.. If your really stuck.. you can always carry 2 jacks in the car and jack up one side of the car and just swap the rear for the front and put the spare on the rear... So if you throw a flat, you need to change 2 tires instead of one... Or just carry a full size spare in your trunk, but the carpeted trunk board will not sit flush..

Good luck in your decesion... I say go Wilwood if you can find out if they will fit 100% with your stock wheel and 5mm spacer.. DO NOT go higher than 5mm... that is no good and NOT SAFE..

Actually, you don't even need two jacks. If the flat is on the front, jack up the rear and put the spare on the rear. Then jack up the front, take the full sized rear tire and put it on the front. But you do still need to change two tires.

I must admit that at the time I was writting my post I did not think about the spare tire options as you guys have stated.

I like the Rotora's but I still don't know if they sell any upgrades for the rear and if I go for the Rotora I already would be paying a good chunck of money for the brakes (front and rear). to spent an extra $700.00 in pouder coating to black is not something I would like to do. I think they could just come out with blacks for the same price.

I have the wilwood kit (13.1 fronts and blank rears). $1750 for the whole set. If you get the 12" front rotors, it will fit stock rims, but with a spacer I *BELIEVE* 13s will fit stocks also. I haven't gotten a chance to test fit stock rims yet.

ronnie0738 Thanks for the info, let me know if you find something else. Do you know if they have a set of calipers for the rear?

Oh wow I didn't think about the spare. The spare will not fit if you have bigger brakes? I can't do that I need a spare with all the driving I do.

To my knowledge, there is not an aftermarket caliper for the rear. Most of the braking is done by the fronts, so it's not that big of an issue. It would look nicer though.

As for the spare issue, it's not a problem b/c you only have to worry about the fronts. As cartan said, if you get a flat in front, just swap a rear wheel and put the donut on the rear.

The concerns about the spare are taken care off, but what is this I hear about the Willwoods "need to be rebuilt once a year"?

Can anyone confirm that.

Who said that? I believe I was one of the first and only active member on this board who got the wilwoods. They have been great.

any calipers that do not come with dust-boots on the piston will require more frequent servicing than those that have dust-boots. i've never seen the wilwood calipers in person so i wouldn't know often they would need to be serviced.

That is exactly what I heard as the reason why the Wilwoods would need to be rebuilt yearly.

I have 18s, but the stock rims should fit with the 12.1 rotors or with a spacer with 13" rotors.

I will ask the makers of this kit about the dust-boot.

Here's their reply:
E-mail from Sherwin at Brake zone

Its true that the calipers do not have dust boots but that doesnt mean they have to be rebuilt more often. On the track, the dust boots melt anyway. They actially cause the caliper to seize when that happens, thats why they dont use them.

Anyhow, long story short, the only thing you need to be concerned about is what you swap out pads. One simple procedure will ensure a long lasting caliper. When you take the old pads out, before you push the pistons back into the caliper, make sure you clean them completely. Not with brake cleaner though. Scotch gaurd works best. This will save the inner seals from ever leaking. I have had a set on my buddies miata for almost 4 years now with constant tracking and street driving. Neither of the two calipers have needed to be rebuilt.

If ever a time comes that the calipers do need to be rebuilt, Wilwood only charges about $35 a caliper to rebuild!!!!!!!
So just make sure to clean the caliper when swapping pads and it's all good.

Thanks for the reply

Ok, just alittle recap on my criteria

1. Fits the stock 03 CL-S 17" wheels.
Rotora Wilwood
OK Don't know

2. Is black in color because I don't want to call attention to my car.
Rotora Wilwood
No Yes

3. The company offer an upgrade for the rear rotors and calipers.
Rotora Wilwood
Rotors Yes Yes
Calipers Don't know Yes (don't know which to be exact)

4. I never had to use the spare tire, but if I have to buy a full spare with rim then that is OK but I need to know in order to keep a functional spare.
Rotora Wilwood
Already know that neither would fit the spare in front

Wilwood is looking pretty good, I just need to find out if a kit that fits the stock rims was ever developed.

Q3: Wilwood only offers blanks for rears (stock size, but cross-drilled/slotted, Cad plated). Use stock calipers.

I still need to test the stock rims with the 13" rotor...12.1" rotor will fit the stock rim.

Rolie - Can I borrow your rim yet?

I guest I will have to go with Rotora and then paint them black, unless someone has done the Willwood kit on stock wheels.

Anyone?
