Big Brake Kit Update!

Okay guys… Here’s a Big Brake Kit update!

Your right most people could not afford Mov’it Brakes so… how about Wilwoods?

Been doing more research on Wilwoods and got to the bottom of the few complaints I heard. Long story short, all were due to faulty installation.

So after hearing this I did more research on them and found a lot of great things about them, including their association with NASCAR.

I called Wilwood Engineering and talked to a Dave Polack to see if they would be interested in designing a front and rear Big Brake Kit specifically for my car. We talked for quite a while and at the end of our conversation he told me that he might be able to do something about it.

He referred me to Angel in the Parts Department at Valencia Acura in who might help in getting this off the ground. Valencia Acura is located in Valencia, Ca. Just north of Los Angeles. So I gave Angel a call and we talked. Right away he realized the market for the kit and decided to have a meeting with his superiors about them that same day.

Again, long story short, Valencia Acura and Wilwood Engineering will be working together to develop a Big Brake Kit for the Acura CL. The kit would have a six-piston caliper with 13 inch cross-drilled and slotted rotor (silver) in front and a four-piston caliper with 12.4 inch crossed-drilled and slotted rotor (silver) in back. Plain rotors would be an option.

According to Angel, he would have these available in a few weeks.

If anyone is interested, give Angel a call at Valencia Acura at (661) 255-3000. I’m sure he would love to hear from you. And tell him Larry told you to call.

Soopa… you owe me one.

I don't believe so. The six-piston caliper is quite large and with the 13 inch rotor the smallest rim would be 18 inches.

Like I said, I don't believe so. With the 6-piston caliper and 13 in rotor up front, you'll need at least an 18 inch rim.

Give Angel a call tomorrow, I'm sure he could give you more information. But realize he's just starting this project he might not know all the specifics.

And again tell him I told you to call. He might give you a break in price.

Oh darn, still its within driving distance, but I'll be that Valencia Acura will be distributing it through their shop they have. Its like PARK AVE. The best service there, fast, efficient and they dont rip you off. I get very good prices there. I got my headers and AEM intake bought there and installed as well. Luis is one great mechanic, like Jens, but nobody can be Jens of Park Ave heh. I rate Luis 2nd.:P :P

Smaller forged wheels may work...

Well, this sounds interesting, but I wonder about the dimensions.

Originally, the Brembos were reported to need 18" wheels, when they needed 17- or 18-inch wheels with the main concern being the spoke clearance. (Ask Astroboy about his spacers)

I am still baffled that 10" disks easily fit inside of 13" wheels, and the current factory disks are 11.8" (close to 12" and fit in 16- or 17-inch wheels), but these "BIG BRAKE" kits need to have manhole cover sized wheels to support an 1/2" increase in disk radius (and I get the 6-pison issue; but those pistons are pretty small for more even distribution of clamping force, etc)

Are you really sure that all 17" wheels will be excluded and only 18" and bigger wheels will work with the setup (I looked at a number of the upgrade kits and the required ID didn't look that brutal for a good forged wheel [as in not having a very thick rim/flange like the stock wheel].)

If you're talking about demand, why build a kit that is going to require aftermarket wheels?

That probably takes 80% of CL owners out of the running right away.

Hopefully Brembo will come through with the rotors next month like they said and if Snook gets the 4 piston calipers finished us lowly stock-wheel-havers can get some new brakes.

OK im back from my informative trip to Valencia Acura.

YEs they are definately doing the Wilwood brakes, for the front and rears (there ya go Astroboy) and very very soon they are doing the R&D on a CLS, which happens to be the Valencia acura manager, good friend of mine. Hes gonna come by my house whenever they get his car fitted with them, and we can go for a test drive (he lives up the street from me).

Angel however was off work today but anything else you guys would like me to find out, post it on here.

Interesting you mention that. I have the 17x8” SSRs -- which will fit the 13" Brembos – and the thought of having to carry a full spare or do full front/rear/spare swaps on the road give me pause. The Brembos and Willwoods make great kits, but there is a certain amount of "comfort" that I enjoy by being able to put on the tiny spare or even the stock wheels (if I move to the snowy hills).

I would hope that a number of people would realize that a well-made rotor similar to the Willwood rotor (with tons of nice thin curved cooling fins for great cooling) would do wonders for our car with a cool air duct kit. Add in some high BP Dot 4 fluid and some great pads, and you have a great street setup...

But wouldn't the upgrade make carrying a full spare worth-while? And is it safe to assume this setup would also work on the TL? Then again, I'd hate not to be able to run my stock TL-S rims in the winter when I get a set of 18's.

Well, I could look a little trunk space, and lay down another $500+ for wheel and tire (couldn't use the stock 17x7" wheels and stock brand new OEM tires). I also couldn't use the stock wheels for winter (if ever required) and/or 16" rims for winter (Ok, so I'm asking for a bit too much).

After I posted this, I was looking at car mags and wondering why so many cars have 13" binders with 17" wheels (with no problems). The stocks are almost 12" (11.8)...

The Brembos are great, but there might be a cheaper alternative for street applications. For example, an 11.8" rotor with the fins you see in the picture *and* a hole punched in the heat shield with some ducting run to the fronts. The rotors would/should be aluminum hat versions with the inner venting exposed cleanly to allow maximum airflow and fast cooling of the rotors.

Will you guys quit worrying about a spare! Use the donut spare from a 91-96 Toyota Supra. It’ll work with the Big Brake kit.

Well, one thing at a time -- let's see if the kits fit 17" wheels first...

If you guys are worried about the spare, why not take it out completely...just get a can of that instant tire inflater thingy. Don't have to worry about the spare, and you save some weight too.

Interesting idea about the fix-a-flat, however, it is not safe nor recommended to use fix a flat products on Z-rated, low profile tires.

Don't ask me why 'cause I dunno (although I can think of some pretty reasonable ideas why it might be bad).

Anyone know if they can just make a 4-pot caliper for the front so we dont have to have 18 inch rims?

6-pot calipers are nice but not much of us CL/TL owners would want them. They would cost alot more compared to the 4-pot calipers.

4-pot calipers would allow for using the spare tire would it not?

Anyone have any up to date info?

If this kit hasnt been made or designed yet... why not design it to fit 17" wheels?

That way, those with stocks can get them and those of us with 17" aftermarket rims can use them too?

Or does that make too much sense? I would love to upgrade the brakes, but not if I have to dump my SSR comps...

Already laid out 2k for rims and tires....
