bending a rim
bending a rim
is it a real risk?
I have good quality chromed OZ Antares 18" rims, how likely am I to bend them? I've had em on for a couple days and I really cringe every time I go over a pothole.
I've literally pulled over thrice to look at the rims to see if they are bent :o
Does this change/increase/decrease after installing springs?

OZ are pretty good rims, you should be okay, it's not likely, but it's still a possiblility. Just don't buy shitty rims, cause you get what you pay for.

Any wheel can get bent if you hit a crevice large enough.

Not likely, as long as you keep your tires at the proper inflation. Yes, harder springs will increase your risk of bending the rim - more force is required to compress the spring, or conversely, the same amount of force compresses the spring less. The wheel can't get out of the way, and must absorb more impact.
Think of it this way - imagine an empty soup can hanging from a string - hit it, and it flies out of the way unharmed. Now, put that soup can on its' side on the floor. Hit it again. It can't move, so it dents to absorb the force.

BTW, I have 18's and if you go over a pot hole and heare a metallic sounds like metal against metal (or soup can against soup can), you bent your rim.

Boy, what a great analogy. I was kinda confused about that spring thing until you gave the soup can example. I wonder how my car would ride if I put soup cans in place of the springs? What do you think? Can you give me another analogy? Just wondering

Just be carefull as hell when you drive! I'm very conscience of the road ever since I got my 18's. Also, even though your rims dont look bent from the outside....they may be slightly bent on the inside of the wheel..which may be very minor and not noticable when you drive. I'm sure you're probably going to go stock in the winter, once your remove your wheels from your car, you can really see if you did any damage (if you didnt notice by then).

It's my biggest fear that I'm gonna bend a rim.
My friend had bent one of his rims, and he kept it after he replaced it, and last night he showed it to me, and it just looks SICK... there's just this FLAT part on it.
Yuck. I dunno; it's like, the metal is so hard, it's difficult to believe that it would BEND, but I guess it happens all the time. I just drive really carefully everywhere I go; lookin like a Grandma over speed bumps and potholes.
