From what I've read about those types of detectors, they tend to give up a lot in distance and accuracy.

Think about it, the lower the detector is mounted on the car, the higher the car has to be to detect. If you're coming up over a rise in the road, it will take much longer to pick up a cop than a detector mounted high up on the windshield.

I’m not that familiar with THAT detector, but I have read that the built in ones aren’t that great.
They’re mounted LOW on the car and therefore forward range is compromised.
And of course you have no REAR detection.

If an invisible unit is a must, go for it…..otherwise go with a V1 or 8500.

Passport SR1 & SRX

First off, I DO want to acknowledge that the overall concensus on this forum seems to be that there nothing better than a V1. I don't want to start any arguments, but I am a Passport kinda guy.

Passport actually makes a couple of pretty good remote detectors. My brother has one of these installed on his Mercedes, and I'm considering getting one for my CL-S. I think it would look really clean by installing it in the useless "notepad holder" in the dash or as a flip down in the sunglass holder. I would probably opt to install it into the notepad holder because you wouldn't have to open the sunglass holder everytime and the sunglass holder is more useful. It would also be less noticeable from the rear (when a cop is behind you at night). It does come with a rear sensor mounted above your license plate frame. The SR1 also comes with a Laser Shifter which will actually jam LIDAR (laser) which works in both the front and rear.

As far as the costs, consider this: If you buy a V1 and get the optional "rearview mirror display", you would be paying almost the same price and still have a detector mounted on your windshield. BTW, my bro has the SR1 which the website sells for $999. He told me he bought his AND had it installed for a little less than $800 at a local shop.

I'm not going to argue about the performance of these Passports compared to a V1 cause God knows where that will go. I do want to say that, FOR ME, getting a windshield mounted detector and then getting a "hidden" remote is pointless. My current Passport offers a SmartCord which is a lot like the remote display for the V1, and I do not use it.

In my opinion (for what that's worth), even if I have to sacrifice a little perfomance (debateable) for a clean and stealthy look, it would be worth it. Not knocking the V1, it's a great detector, I would just rather have one of these.

I guess it's all in your priorities. I would much rather have the best oerforming detector. What good is a "stealthy" detector if it does not give you enough warning?

Well around here, cops are dicks when they see you have a radar detector. I've had cops follow me for miles when they see my detector hanging on my windshield even though it's legal here. When I take it off (usually right after I've cleaned my car) cops seem to leave me alone. I've actually gotten away with a warning instead of a ticket a couple of times. I have ALWAYS gotten a ticket when they see my detector. Nothing makes you 100% safe, especially when you are talking about laser. You are right about personal prefence....it all depends on what you're looking for.
