Back-Up Navi Disc Question

Now that I will be purchasing my first Navi DVD, I am planning on backing up my $180 (little expensive) investment.. I did a test today on my old Navi disc and it seems the +R format is the format that worked and the -R did not work..
I'm just curious if this is the results others have had...? Please note any comments and please post if you've had any luck with this.
I would also like to know if anyone has had any problems with their back-up Navi disc....?

So I voted +R because that's all I have or used in the past.

I had trouble.

Made a personal backup copy just in case my original got scratched or cracked. It copied just fine.

When I place it into the Navi, it worked. Until....

Later. Soon it started erroring out, maybe once or twice. But a simple restart (of the car took care of this). After awhile, I started getting more problems. Seems that first thing in the morning or late at night, no problems. During the course of the day, the disc wouldn't work. Since Navi is not light sensitive, I attributed it to heat. After reaching a particular temp, the disc would fail. The hotter it was, the fast I would get the error message said Invalid DVD. After awhile it because a total pain and I discarded the DVD.

It's no fun starting up your car, waiting two or three minutes for the Invalid DVD to come up, or if you start driving and it pops up and you really want to use Navi, then you find someplace to stop and go to the trunk to load bad data. Not worth it.

Haven't revisited this deal all Fall/Winter because I was lead to believe we might have something soon. Hope you have better luck.

So far….So good.
It worked fine driving into work this morning.
I even searched for a couple of restaurants and that worked too.

Ken - Out of curiousity what brand of dvd+r did you use ? Was it a +R or +RW ? What burning program did you use ? And how long ago was this ?

Just trying to possibly eliminate some possible bugs..

ive noticed the same issues with normal cd-r's theyre fine for a while, then w.in a few months, some dont work at all. to solve the problem, ive bought sony and phillips (i think) cd-r's and slowed down the burn speed. it works fine now

Slower burn speed will most definitely make your burning more failsafe. Faster you burn (in relation to burner rating), the more likelihood of errors. True for all optical media. I've got a 52x burner with 52x discs, but when I want something important done, I'll leave it at 16x. The extra 4 minutes kick in after a year or so.

Legend & Gold , This thread is for Navi DVD back-up. And when we're referring to -R and +R these are both for DVD's not CD's..

I gave it a good test last night.
I was traveling through several different areas that were well mapped and my copy didn’t miss a beat.
I even plugged in some far away destination addresses routing a map from Pennsylvania to California and it mapped them out fine.
I figured this would require it to read from most areas of the DVD.

For the record I’m using:
Memorex DVD +R blanks
NERO 6 Ultra software
Sony DRU-510A DVD/CD burner running at 4X copy speed

I am also having excellent results with the Navi Disc DVD +R, I basically did the same searches etc..

I am using :
DVD +R Accu (1x) but burning at 2x
Nero 5.5 w/ latest updates
Sony DRU-500a DVD/CD Burner

Hehe, I don't think anyone here can burn DVDs at more than 4x.

I can't give you the details for sure but if I can remember, something like:

4x, DVDxCopy, Nero, and a few other programs, I've tried this several ways and they all seem to fail eventually. So the deal is they worked perfectly at first and started to fail slowly until they eventually totally failed.

+R, Verbatim or Imation and maybe Memorex.

Dell computer.

I used -R/RW. doesn't work. Then I tried +R/RW.. works like a charm. case closed. ONLY +R/RW media works on our navi system.

thanks! it burns at 8x on the current 4x media as long as you use what Plextor recommends

Several reviews have verified the 8x speed, using Verbatim & Ricoh 4x DVD+R media

Sweet that's new, eh? For some reason, I feel more comfortable with slower since blank DVDs are still relatively expensive.

I'm kinda surprised -Rs don't work.....

Firmware is provided by the manufacturer of the dvd burner.. I have the Sony DRU-500a,the first dual format.. And one of the first updates was one that allowed me to burn 1x dvdr @ 2x... This is the latest release :
Firmware Upgrade 2.0G
Allows your Dual RW drive to record at 4X on 4X compatible DVD-/+R media.
Improves reading and writing performance and reliability.
Reduces vibration noise for the discs with unbalance or eccentricity.
Improves audio playback on written discs with stand alone systems.
Improves reading and writing performance with 8cm DVD-R/RW.

This is where I go for my support : http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500adwn.htm
