In Austin, Want CL Type S!

Two months to go on my current car lease and then I'M BUYING A CL TYPE S.
I test drove at David McDavid here in Austin and was blown away. Amazing car and I can't wait to buy one.
Here's my question: where's the best place for me to buy?

David McDavid is the only Acura dealership in Austin and I'm not sure I'll get a good price from them. I've heard they treat young buyers poorly (I'm 24) and I was also sketched out when they quoted $900+ for the spoiler. It's $479 on ahmotor!!

So: does anyone have info on David McDavid Austin or other Texas dealerships that aren't too far (maybe dallas or san antonio)?

Lastly, any advice on price would be appreciated...I want a CL Type S with Nav and spoiler and don't want to get ripped off. I figure I'll have some breathing room since the new CL is coming out and of course the TL Type S....not to mention the turn the economy is taking. What are y'alls thoughts?

I CAN'T WAIT TO GET THIS CAR!!

#1 do not pay $900 for that spoiler. that is a good price, but you can get a better deal at http://www.sportwing.com/spoilers/

#2 you should be able to get it below invoice. i got mine last summer for $1350 below invoice. my total was 29460 before tax, fees, license, etc. (non-navi)

I got my TL at David McDavid of Austin. They won't lower the price at all! They are very tough to deal with, but other than the price issue, they're nice people.

That price couldn't be below "invoice", he must mean MSRP (sticker). There is no way you could get one for less than what they (the dealer) paid.

I bought my CL-S at Vandergriff in Arlington. You could probably call them up and see what kind of deal you could get. Also, the guys from Houston have been saying that Sterling McCall Acura (formely Acura Southwest) is the best place in Texas to buy.

Well...Invoice isn't actually what the deal paid, necessarily. If there are holdbacks (factor-to-dealer incentives) involved then they could actually be paying well below invoice.
Still, I think anyone who gets a price at or below invoice should be happy :-)

got mine there at David Mcdavid. Besides being the only game in town (who says you have to limit your selection to Austin dealers), their customer svc dept is quite good. Only deal with Bobby from their svc dept.

As for the sales, i paid list (but that was last year) and with the 02's coming out (as I saw in Popular Mechanics), they should be lowering prices of 01 soon. Also, I used Allen Mack. Feel free to drop my name (Lee A) as I grilled them quite a bit before buying. Allen is a good guy, courteous and responsible. He's not a techie/detail phreak like all of us on this board are, but I was quite happy with him.

Also try and negotiate free service up to 30k. (i know, I know, they give you free oil changes, but go for the free svc as well)

Hope that helps!

P.S. - fax John Eagle Acura in Houston to see if they'll match your price

True, but according to my dealer there are no holdbacks on this car (although Edmunds says different) and the guy that posted earlier certainly didn't get it for below invoice. The MSRP is $30,330, invoice is $27,648

Ummm..do believe your dealer over Edmunds? Is Edmunds every innacurate? What is the definitive way of finding out if the dealer's getting any additional discounts?

You could try contacting Acura customer service directly. Other than that, I can't say for sure how to get 100% accurate info.

I recently (about 2 weeks ago) purchased the CLS. Shopped Austin, San Antonio, Houston. David McDavid in Houston gave me the best price but was on the other side of town from where my friends and family live. I had Sterling McCall match it (aka Acura Southwest) and got a pretty good deal. $31000 drive out (tt&l, and all fees).

Silver no NAV, spoiler, mudguard, wheel locks.

I guess that boils down to 28,100 roughly before taxes and fees. I would aim around this price when buying in Austin, the San Antonio dealer's "no haggle" so don't even bother looking here.

Finally, I'd test drive the car again and just ask hesitant. "The 2002's coming out".
"The TL-S is coming out, and 4 doors traditionally have better resale". "It looks a lot like a 2 door accord ex". Then as an afterthought ask him what the best possible price he can offer is. If all else fails, visit some friends in Houston, goto Sterling McCall Acura and speak with the internet rep Phillipe and get one around the same price I did.

FYI, my car was new with all the interior stuff still wrapped up in plastic on the delivery truck. Had 3 miles on it I think, so it wasn't a car sitting on the lot gathering dust they had to move.

Good luck,

Smeg

I got my Type-S from David McDavid.

Unfortunately, this was the third day on the job for our sales person, and I knew more about the car than he did.

Anyway, you need to let them know that you are looking at other cars as well. Mention the IS300. We were trying for a specific payment amount that we knew we could get close to with the IS300 (from a dealer in Dallas, not in Austin). We let them know what that deal was and that we didn't care which car we ended up with. We told them to do their best and whomever was lower would get the deal.

The result? We got the Type-S we wanted for a monthly payment that was about $145 dollars less than what they wanted when we first walked in.

You've probably heard this before, but the key is this: you've got to let them know you're willing to walk away and that you don't want to sit around while they screw around with the numbers. Know how much you want to spend and get right to it. If they can't do it, they can't do it.

I did this too. I told the salesperson that I was also looking at the Accord EX V6, IS300, and Solara. He was like, "Well, the CL has this and that over those others and blah, blah, blah." I said, "Well, I want to buy today. You gotta work with me here or I'm gonna go to another dealer." That got his attention. I felt that I got a very good deal at the time. The car model was still pretty new and I got mine for MSRP minus destination. They also threw in the tint and wheel locks.

I bought mine from Jack Pace at Mac Churchill in Ft. Worth. The Acura dealer here would not negotiate. (They have a one fixed price policy.) I called all over the state but Jack gave me the best price. I was a little worried about a bait and switch but flew up to DFW anyway hoping for the best. The deal was exactly as agreed on the telephone. I recommend Jack and will contact him in a year or so when I'm ready to get my wife an MDX.

I bought mine from David McDavid as well. I'm not sure how much they will negotiate price with you but I do have a lot of good to say about their service. Try to get them to throw in some extras like spoilers or free service onstead of go for price.

Good to see some of the Austin guys coming out of the woodwork.

Bought at DMD here in Austin @ sticker, no deals. Buy spoiler from wings west, not from dealer (however you might want them to install it).

Haven't been terribly impressed with DMD, but as for Acura...exceptional service.

We'll have to meet up, gotta tell you a horror story you won't believe about my buddy with a TL. Isn't that right Ult??

So..anyone for another meet?

Alright, the Austin DMD dealer has some balls.

My friend bought a maroon TL last in 1999. A week after he bought it, he took it back in to get tint or something changed on the car. Dropped the car off and picked it up later that week. However, after he drove it home, he realized IT WASN'T HIS CAR. He had a mark or something that let him know it was his on it, and it wasn't there. The kicker is that he had a coffee mug in the trunk that was there?? So what happened?

The dealer actually tried to switch the cars on him with someone elses exact same car! WTF! Anyhow, he went back an busted the guy responsible switching the cars and taking the coffee mug out of his trunk and throwing it in the other TL.

Needless to say he is getting excellent service from the dealer now. It ended up being the fault of one person and not the group, I don't think he had a job much longer

before you negotiate with the salesman, call the service department and ask how much for part&install of accessories like spoiler, etc. it will probably be less than the salesman will try to charge you. then smile and tell the salesman you won't pay more than that.

also just in case, bring a printout on the car from greenlight.com so you (and your salesman, if necessary) will know the maximum you're willing to pay.

for my car, the greenlight.com price was $700 over invoice.

No CLS yet. Still riding out my current lease & I figure the closer we get to TLS and CLS '02, the better deal I'll get on CLS '01.
So now I have to live with the torture of lurking on this board & passing the *exact* car I want everyday in my company's parking lot. Red CL Type S, no mods but well taken care of. *sigh*
Wait a second...I'll have a better car than that since it is lacking the spoiler & Navi :-).
I'll definitely be posting once I've taken delivery of my baby.
