For AT's, D4 or D5?

Just curious, but when you guys with automatics drive around, do you put it in D4 or D5?

I ask because when I got my CL at the dealer he told me to put it in D5, but I got a friend who says you should keep it in D4 unless you plan on cruising around the highway or something. He says you get much better low-end power when you're in D4.

Anyone know?

I use D5.......so that if I have to pass or something, I can throw it into SS easier. But I'm not sure which one is for normal driving lol

Hmm...good question.

I always keep it in D4 except when I was going uphill.

But honestly...I have had no idea.

Would be good to know or if I actually read the owners manual!

Owners manual says you should use D5 for "normal everyday driving" since it's overdrive, I guess.

D5 is overdrive...
I remember back in MY (stupid) days when I hit 147 in the type-s it hit the rev limiter and it was in 4th gear at around 5k RPMS so 5th gear is strickly overdrive to get better miles on highway , It might be better to keep her in D4 around town!

over drive = last gear = better gas mileage

in 4 speed cars, D4 = overdrive

always use d5 in city or hwy. in d4, u'll just loose gas.

there's no point in using d4 in city, u might as well drive in SS or shift it manually from 1 - d5.

if u wanna have fun driving in city, just leave it in d3, u'll get bad gas mileage, but u'll have better response from the car. OR just use SS mode.

to sum it all up:
Always use D5, if u wanna get on it, switch to SS or shift manually.

What he said. There is no good reason to leave it in D4. It was made to run just fine in D5. All this talk about using the other gears to pass, or go up hill, Why? It an automatic tranny, just hit the gas pedal and it will downshift. The ONLY time I bother with it is if I'm at 85MPH and need to pass in a hurry. Then and only then do I manually pull it back to D3, because at that speed it will only kick down to 4th gear. I don't even think SS mode will let it go to 3rd. So you have to put into 3rd yourself.

No reason to leave it in 4th.

I use D4 around town and D5 only on the highway. Why? Because I feel that it is slow to respond and lugs alittle bit in D5 above 35 or 40 mph. Above 60 or 65 I shift it into D5. My few seconds of pretending I have the 6 speed manual

Around the city I definitelyeave it in d4. It seems to hold the gears a little longer a d shift at higher rpms. When in d5 seems to lug and shift sooner, to save gas obvisouly.

question, but would shifting from D4 to D5 with your foot on the gas pedal, do anything bad to the transmission? Just making sure.

Also, would using SS every time you drive, increase the chances of transmission problems in the long run? I mean, when I use SS I typically shift up at close to 4000 RPM... heh sometimes more.

Some people have said that the SS puts more strain on the transmission.

But...a lot of people use it religiously.

I know...a lot of help!

was actually thinking that maybe SS would put extra strain on the transmission if you were constantly up and down shifting. Hope it'd be that and not anything RPM-related.

just so you all know D4 and D4 are both overdrive gears on the 5at. The engine has enough torque that it can easily cruze around in 5th gear at 40+ with no effort.

i usually lock my car into 4th or 5th when I am rush hour traffic depending upon speed

wanna make an addition/correction to my post.

after reading here as some members said, D4 usually lets our cars stay in lower gears longer, I started driving my car in D4 (city) to check and it actually does as they said.
I'm not sure why, but I guess thats just how Acura designed these cars.

driving in D4 is way more responsive, not only does it stays in lower gears longer, but it also down shifts faster.
but again, cons: lower gas mileage, more strain on tranny for down shifting.

So, I will correct myself, city driving is more fun in D4 as some guys mentioned here.

next couple of weeks, i'll see how different D3 is.

another thing I heard from some guy locally is that any D-Gear is an overdrive gear, but I'll have to check on it and get back to you guys with more info.

its just like driving it D5 when it shifts from 4th to 5th on its own. It all depends on how heavy ur foot is on the gas at the instant when the gears shift.

so no, you dont have to remove your foot from the gas to switch from D4-D5, or any gear while up-shifting.

I'm pretty sure it will, but not rock-solid on it.

What about us 4-speeders? D3 or D4 for faster, better response?

u have 1st get CL? I'm pretty sure its the same deal with D3 on 4 speed cars. Give it a try and see how different D3 is in city.

When I had my 4 cyl accord, I remember doing some sort of diagnosis (forgot what kind it was) on my transmission that required me to only put it in 1st, 2nd, and D4, but not D3, so I'm guessing the computer responds differently to it on 4-speeds.

I had the car since it was Brand new..First 30K used only ss mode (Dogged her I was young and stupid so i HAD to smoke every civic that pulled up to me) Bye BYe tranny at 3oK from 30k-99k used auto and still SS mode Used ss mode like 1/2 the time and my tranny lasted double the time. Bye BYe tranny #2 at 99K miles. So now that im not under warrenty anymore I only keep it in D5 and now have 165k on tranny and still shifting like new (65k on new tanny)!

So unless you wanna put your tranny in the grave pre-maturly DONT overuse the SS mode!

D3 is the 1:1 gear on the 5spd at (2nd Gen CLs) the 5at first 3 gears are close ratio for max performance out of the car 4th and 5th are overdrive

D3 is the 1:1 gear on the 4spd at (first gen CLs) 4th is overdrive

either way driving the car in d3 will result in max performance at a severe cost of fuel economy.

Mine only does that usually if I'm still in 2nd or 3rd gear. Usually I get that when I'm still in 3rd

Hey I've got a set of S2000 rear seats in PERFECT condition

I use SS all the time too...but I need to stop downshifting because apparently the 3-2 downshift is HORRIBLE for our trannies..

SS mode is bad for gas, and bad for the shit trannys that we have. Upshifting...sure, but down shifting, why? Brakes are cheaper then trannys. Buy a 6 speed if you want to shift. I only use d5 on the freeway. D4 for the streets.
