Anyway to stop that auto overdrive??
Thanks for reading
I was headed home on Sunday and I did a top speed run on the highway. BTW, I have a 01' Type S. I started at 80mph in sportshift at 3rd gear, and I pushed it all the way to redline. When I reached about 120 mph (At that point it was right below redline), i shifted into 4th gear. At that point, I was approaching another VTEC engagement point, but while I'm still flooring it, the tachometer never gets me there, the needle actually lowered a bit. It went from 4900rpms to like 48 and 47.
So I did a little research on our cars and it comes to find out we have automatic overdrives on our cars which comes on at 4th and 5th gears. After 3rd gear, if we're driving at high speeds, its kinda hard to go anywhere with a few of your cylinders not working. My question is, has anyone deactivated that overdrive feature or is there anyway to obtain that power after 120 mph?

What you are talking about does not sound like overdrive as you put it. It sounds more like converter lock up. Its normal. And no way to stop it. Just keep it floored and it will do what it is supposed to. Might want to check your tranny fluid level just to be sure.
What do you mean by "its kinda hard to go anywhere with a few of your cylinders not working". Are you saying that overdrive deactivates cylinders?
Also your tranny does not have some special overdrive. It has 5 gears. Thats it. Nothing eles. People just call 5th gear overdrive. Same thing.

The CLS tranny has 5 gears and NO actual OD unit. I've been under the car plenty and I assure you there is not OD unit on this car. Look up what a OD unti is!
The reason they call it a Automatic w/OD is because the 5th gear has less then a 1 to 1 ratio. Thats all,
You really are craptastic!

Maybe you should learn how a car works before trying to educate others. Overdrive is any time the engine speed is slower than the output shaft speed, ie your gear ratio is less than one. You can't turn overdrive on or off in a gear, the gear ratio determines whether it is an overdrive gear or not.
OP, no comment. Go to howstuffworks and read up about transmissions.

As ussual you dont have a clue as to what you are talking about!

It states that it has overdrive in these two links as well:

uhm i hate to break this to the people saying that the CL-S has no over drive gears......Gear #3 is drive where the ratio is approximately 1:1. Gears 4 and 5 have a OVER DRIVE RATIO where the input shaft on the transmission turns fewer times than the output shaft
the car will reach top speed in 4th and 5th gears of approximately 147mph (govenor limited).
5-speed automatic transmission
1st - 2.563
2nd - 1.551
3rd - 1.021
4th - 0.653
5th - 0.470
Reverse - 1.846
Final Drive - 4.428
OP what you experienced was the TORQUE CONVERTER locking up.....

I was correct to tell him there is not speacial overdrive in this car! Only overdriven gear ratios.

Let me make it easy for you. When someone talks about a controlable overdrive this is what comes to mind.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overdrive_(mechanics)
Paragraph 4
The device for achieving an overdrive transmission was usually a small separate gearbox, attached to the rear of the main gearbox and controlled by its own shift lever.[1] These were often an optional extra on some models of the same car

^that type of OD is typically used on HIGH HP a setup where the gas milage was horrid so they had to do something to make it reasonable or on a truck where a typical 4AT would not work again due to massive torque that would tear a 4AT apart
Most transmission use a hydraulically controlled manual (honda and the rest of the pack now) or older cars would invert 2nd gear by manipulating the planitary gearset on the transmission (GM TH 200R4 for example)
