I installed front and rear R1 Concepts slotted and cross drilled rotors and Axxis ceramic pads on Monday. That night I did the break in proceedure that Axxis suggests which is go 40 mph and then lightly brake until 10mph and repeat about 10 times allowing a 1/4 mile in between stops. Problem is I'm still getting squeeling and squeeking especially when the rotors/pads warm up and it almost sounds like a very faint ticking/rasping (almost like a faint sound of having a playing card in your BMX bike spokes) mostly like it's coming from the rear. The brake feel is totally fine, the brakes feel like they grab a lot better and the car stops quicker, I don't get any shutters or vibration when braking, and if I have the windows up I can't really hear the sounds so they're not super loud, but with the windows down and especially if passing by a wall or car I can hear it very clearly.

Does anyone have a similar set up and does the braking sound different with slotted/drilled rotors than regular solid rotors? Do ceramic pads take a lot longer to break in? Do slotted/drilled rotors make a different sound because they are constantly cutting and smoothing the pads and air is going through them to cool the rotors? I'm hoping the sound gets less and less as time goes by but after three days there doesn't seem to be much difference. Anyone experience similar with either of these? Any input would be appreciated. If it doesn't go away I'm worried I'm going to have to spend $$$ to have them checked out.

the only thing i can think of is that when you install new brake pads your supposed to put a gel on the back of the pad to reduce any noise, it usually comes with the pads when you buy them. anyways hope this helps thats all i can really think of

Mine just took time. I have slotted and cross drilled on all fours w/ Axiis pads on the front and ebc greenstuff on the back. The front squealed for a while (1000 miles) or so and haven't since. The rear never squealed. Bear in mind I didn't perform any break in procedures after installation.

Mine don't squeal, or make any strange noises. But when I brake hard I hear the pads clamping the rotor. Makes sort of a low humming pitch. It's completely normal though. See sig for brake setup.

yea its just the sound of the slots going over the pad. My friends always said mine sounded like a locust lol I have new pads now and the sound changed a little bit, now it sounds a lil deeper. Dont worry though, they should make some noise. I hear it Especially when i brake hard from a high speed.

ditto. i also did a variation of that break-in procedure you mentioned. then i held back from aggressive braking for about 400 miles after that. see sig for setup. time to edit yours.

Mine make that same humming noise under hard braking!! I always thought it was something wrong, not major but I never heard that sound before. My do cross drilled & slotted rotors bite though.

Whew, glad to hear it's nothing out of the ordinary. I had a feeling they just sound different. I'll post pictures soon. Thanks everyone, I feel a lot better about the sounds now!

If you remember I just had the same rotors installed and ruined the metallic zinc with Maguair's all wheel cleaner. I painted them with silver caliper paint and they look great! Anyway, I have the exact same clicking noise. It's louder when applying the brake. I think it is completely normal due to the diamond slots. I actually think it sounds pretty cool. I am pretty confident the noise will dim as the rotors and pads are worn in. You should be fine. To anyone interested in these rotors: I would recommend them but be very careful with what you use to clean them

Yeah, I remember, nelskof. I'm glad you saw this thread. Do you have ceramic pads out of curiosity? Yep, I'd recommend the rotors as well, especially considering the price. I got F/R rotors and F/R pads all for a smidge over $300 shipped. Customer service was really good, too. At first when I heard the noise I was stressing thinking the rotors weren't balanced since they're not a big name company and all, but since there's no vibration or shimming when braking, I ruled that out. I don't know if I'd say I think the noise is cool, but it's definitely different than solid rotors and I'm sure it'll get less and less as they wear in. Glad to hear the paint worked out for ya, too!

Here's some quick pictures I just took. The calipers look orange but they're actually a copper/gold color, almost exactly the same color as the Brembos on the G35/350Z's.

Looks like it. I painted mine red. Nice job, looks very nice. I wish rotors could look like that throughout their lifetime and wish they didn't have to get worn in.

Yep, just stock calipers. I didn't do the Legend caliper upgrade because I figured the drilled/slotted rotors with ceramic pads would be good enough for my driving style.

hey Clarise, I have the slotted Rotoras on the same way you have your rotors on mated with ceramic pads. Depending on the temp or if im feathering the brake pedal my rotors will squeal a lil bit. I did what the instructions said to do on the break in period...I'm still biased on the CLs breaking system...I hate how heavy they are. Oh well, such a beautiful car though.

Super, I got my pads from R1 too. I think they are some type of metallic compound...not sure exactly what?? Did you paint your back rotors black? Looks real nice. I painted mine silver and my calipers black. I'll try to post pics tomorrow.

I have Brembo's on the front. I think I paid like $220 or $250 for the pair. I forgot what I have on the back, I think Brembo's as well for like $180-$200.

i have the same setup and have the same issue. my brakes started squeeking a little while after i installed them. They only squeel every once and a while but work fine. dont worry but it. if they work then thats what matters.

If the sound clarise is getting goes away im going to get the r1 rotors. If not, im going with the rotoras

I have had my R1's on now for a few weeks now and they are definitely still making the tick, tick, tick noise. It sounds like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel. It doesn't sound bad to me...just different. BTW it is a constant tick that gets louder when the brakes are applied. It has to be the slots and I think it will go away in time.

I have had my cross-drilled and slotted rotors on all four corners for almost a year and I haven't experienced anything like this...

I have however noticed that when going down a hill on a quiet road and the radio down that I could hear a slight shhhhhhh sound only when I applied the brakes lightly.

How many of you people that have this sound put the rotors on in the same direction as supertrooper?

I still stand by what I said about the slots should enter from the center of the rotor first (when driving forward). Maybe that is why I don't get any of this clicking. Then again, I bought mine off of ebay for only $170 (all four) and they're not a known name brand to me...

Anyways, never heard any sounds like any of you are talking about from mine...

Could be one of the pad retaining clips rubbing against the rotor, that could make a baseball card in the spokes sound. Make sure they're seated properly.

^^ Probably just started noticing it because you're listening for it now. I think the best description was it sounds like locus in the summer time. I actually have gotten used to it and kind of like it now that I don't have the clip rubbing on the rotor making the metal on metal sound. I'd recommend the R1 rotors though, for the price you can't beat em.

I'm glad to see this thread re-open because i've been strongly considering buying the R1 Concepts rotors but instead of using the axxis pads i'm gonna go with EBC RedStuff i think thats an awesome setup ......Just one question, i noticed that there are 2 levels of R1 rotors one is $114 for all four and one is $330 for all four which one did u go with and do u think that the more expensive one is that much better than the cheaper one????? (By the way they refer to the more expensive one as PREMIUM totors)

Just want to post an update here. I installed my r1 concepts slotted/drilled rotors today, using the stock pads and they work very good! No squeels and improved braking. Was kind of a pain removing the old rotors though. The screws were rusted on and hard to get off. So anyone considering doing this mod, go for it!

Okay, this might seem weird, but I didn't go with either one of those choices. I went with these: http://www.r1concepts.com/Items/combo%20premium%20018? After I ordered them I started buggin out that I ordered the wrong ones. I thought it was a typo on the website because it says 97-03 instead of 00-03 and I'm 99% sure our brakes are bigger than 97-99 CLs. I called them after I ordered them and they assured me they would send me the correct rotors for my CL-S. I thought maybe they'd charge me the difference of the $330 ones but they didn't. So I ended up with the premium slotted/drilled rotors for about $150 less. Now I can't attest that they'll keep making this error, but it worked for me. Good luck!

Cool, glad to hear they worked out for ya man. I bet you were starting to worry when I started that thread about the metal on metal sound I was getting!

Definitely something to be prepared for is the frozen set screws. I couldn't budge mine at all with just a screwdriver, so I ended up running down to my local Pep Boys and got an impact screwdriver. I'd never used one before so it was a learning experience, but once I got the right technique down it worked perfectly. I think it was like $10 or something. Sure beats spending $$$ to have a brake shop do it. Anyway, to save some time for anyone whos going to do their own rotors, go buy one before you start. Money well spent.

Ya i had to drill mine out cause they would not budge. I think i got the same set as you because i only spent $150 on all four. Your link didnt work so i cant clarify

I paid about $240 for mine from R1, that was for all 4. They're still making the clicking noise but I think they are great!
