the toyo proxies 4 are the same price as the fz4.
my friend just got the proxies 4 on his 19's and the tire is damn good. very sticky, good traction. looks good also.
$148 a tire dealer cost for 225/35/19.... i dont care, i dont sell tires, but i do have accounts......

The link, http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=18, Shaun S provided in this thread points out that the proxes 4 in size 235/45/17 is only recommended for a 7.5 to 8.5 inch wide rim according to the chart. What do you think about this and would you still buy it. I have a 03' CLS 6spd and my stock tires have a load rating of 93. The proxes 4 in size 225/45/17 offer a load rating of 94 and is rated for a 7 to 8 inch rim. My concern stems from my belief that, assuming we/I am on stock rims, they are 7 inches wide. I would like to go with the wider tire but do not want to compromise safety.
What are your thoughts?

I had a few tire places say they don’t recommend a 235 on a 7.5” Rim.
Even most tire specs I read say 8” minimum for 235.
But it seems like there’s quite a few people here running 235 w/7.5” so I guess we know it fits.

7.5" rim ok for 235/45-17. 8" needed for 235/40-18

If you're talking about a 235/40-18, that does require an 8" minimum width.
A lot of places just don't understand what a "measuring rim" means. I've had MORONS tell me that the measuring rim size (generally the center number) is the BEST rim size (NOT!!!)
If you look on the Toyo website, you will see that the page shows
7.5 - 8.0 - 9.0 for rim sizing. The 7.5 is the minimum approved size, the 8.0 is the “measuring rim” size, the 9.0 is the maximum approved size. Anything outside the range of 7.5- to 9.0-inches is outside of recommended factory limits (exceptions to the rule have been made by various tire companies in conjunction with various car makers in the past).
Trust me, I talked to more than a few Toyo engineers about the T1S, RA1, FZ4 and Proxes 4 they all said the 7.5" wide rim was AOK. (To be clear, I’m talking about a 235/45-17).

My car DOES have 7.5” wide 18” Rims.
So you’re saying 235/40 WON’T fit on there

For a 235/45/17, a 7.5" rim is the specified minimum. We only have a 7" rim stock.
All posts I have seen state that the 235 works fine on the stock rim, but you are out of the specified range so you are accepting some level of risk by using this size.
For a 235/40/18, an 8" rim is the specified minimum. Since the side walls are smaller than the 17, there is less room for flex. That is probably why the 8" is specified here.

The minimum recommended width for the 235/45-17 is 7.5 inches. 235's will fit on, but its not what toyo recommends for that tire.

you guys with the toyo 4s, you like 'em? I'm in a pinch o get tires soon. The toyo 4s are readily available, the T1Ss are a pain to find without have to wait.
so, in short, for those of you with them, whats the verdict on the tire?

Won't fit and not recommended are two different things.
The rest gets into size-by-size and model-by-model comparisons and technically, it's below the recommended minimum. That doesn't mean the tire will blow up; the tire will fall off; the car will drive itself off the road; and so forth...
The analogy to the 235/45-17 being mounted on 7" rims is probably appropriate. There are even some brands and models of a 235/45-17 that will fit very well (although still not recommended), and others that just cause problems. The Toyo T1S is a bitch to align with certain types of aligment gear (old news by now).
YMMV

I'm going to get these:
245/45ZR17 99W
But, I have 8" wide rims...
If you look at the chart here:
http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_specsheet.cfm?id=18
You'll see the range of rims sizes that the tire can fit on (they give 3 widths) The one in BOLD is the recommended tire size, so I always buy the widest tire I can fit that is the recommended size...
I want to hear people comment on this tire first though, especially compared to the T1-S...

The BOLD is the measuring rim width...
Depending on the specific application, it might not be the recommended rim width.
For example, for track use, some people might go to a wider rim. Some makers base the "recommended width" on the tread width (+/- 0.5 inches). However, Toyo doesn't list the tread width for the T1S/Proxes 4 on their site and just because one manufacturer recommends this [+/- 0.5” of tread width], doesn't mean Toyo does.
Don't forget, when you run to the 245/45-17, you are going to have a higher gearing. IMO, you also are going to start having to consider the posibility of having some rubbing.

I’m 99% sure I’m gonna go with the Proxes 4, but I’m still undecided on 225/40 or 235/40.
I guess I’ll give all the info to the tire shop and see if they’re comfortable putting a 235 on a 7.5” wide wheel.
There’s a place right down the road from where I work that sells Toyo.
I’ll probably stop there in a few weeks and see what they say.
We still have a little bit of winter to get through so I’m in no hurry right now.

My rims came in last weekend so I went down to the shop to take a look (too much winter left to put them on yet). The guy I'm dealing with has a lot of good things to say about the Proxies so, unless I see something really negative, I pretty sure that's what I'll be going with as well - 18/235/40 on an 8 inch rim.
