they aren't better than t1-s, but the are much more bang for your buck, you can get these for approx $104 per tire...

These seem to be a 4-season tire, where as the T1-S is 3-season.

With dedicated winters, I'd go with something like the T1-S.

Call me crazy, but I’m actually looking for a tire with little LESS performance then I have now.
My Falken’s are soooooooooo dam sticky the front end of the car HOP-HOP-HOPS its way down the road if I’m too aggressive when I pull out.
Not to mention they only lasted for 14,000 miles.
I’m hoping something with a little LESS adhesion and higher treadwear rating like an all-season tire will work for what I want.
Plus if I get caught in a pinch with an early snowstorm of an inch or two I won’t be dead in the water like I am with a dedicated summer tire.

The Toyo Proxes 4 is one of the final contenders of the tires I’m considering.

Nice to see another ultra-high performance M+S tire in our fitment on the market!

These are M&S rated, but I wouldn’t expect any serious traction with such a tire in more then 2-3 inches of snow.
And I’m sure cornering would still be quite risky.

I’ll still be relying on my BLIZZAK’s for the heavy snow duty.

shawn, u can never have enuff traction, expecially since u got a 6 speed w/ headers, u need all the traction u can get

I have too much traction and the tires are HOPPING.

I’d rather have a little bit of tire spin when I pull out so I don’t have to burn the clutch or throttle back on the accelerator.

But they do have 235/45-17 with a nice 97 load rating and rollout/mile the same as stock...will work for me.


It is great to see more high performance M+S rated tires on the market for those of us that only live on the border of the foul weather line.

I got a price at a local shop for $132 mounted and balanced for size 225/45/17, After reading this post I was curious and called the shop up!! Dont know if it is pricey as that is the only time I heard a price for these! National Discount tire 914-375-0000

Shawn - I'm looking to go with a set of 18s with a Comptech drop (SSR GT1s). Let me know if you go with the 225 or 235 - I prefer the 235 but really don't want to get into a situation where there’s rubbing. Curious to see how things work out for you.

As for the tires, I like the approach as we get late snowstorms and I've been caught with dedicated summers before.

Sure, I’ll help you out and let you know what I find, but it won’t be for a few weeks.
I'm pretty sure I'm going with 235 wide.
I’m currently just in “research mode” and don’t plan to buy mine until late Feb or early March.
We still have 6-8 weeks of winter to go and no sense having brand new tires just sitting in the garage.

I’m planning a trip to Bristol, Tenn. at the end of March so I need to have them installed by then.
I don’t want to drive that far on my snow tires.

Timing will work out good - I don't generally swap the tires until May 1; winter lasts a little longer up here. From what I've read on this board - the 235s should be fine as long as you have the right offset (+48). All of the problems I've read about seem to stem from the offset being less than that.

Great find Shawn, Ive been searching for good A/S tires, and I am very very pleased with my T1-S Proxes, so maybe I'll give these a shot over the pricey Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, or the Coninentals.

ahh, just went looking for some T1-Ss, the guy only has 1 T1S, and plenty of Proxes 4s, but contrary to the article, the price difference isn't 25% less ($267 T1-S, vs $253 Proxy 4)... nice article Shawn, I might go with the proxy 4s since I need some new tires pretty quickly... but damn, did I love those T1Ss...

I just got quoted $253 each from a local retailer, lemme know what you find out.

EDIT: after looking at the first 2 sites that popped up on google, I've found them as low as $202.

hmmm, after reading that article i have considere these tires, i am gonna get new ones in the spring, i dont know if i should go w/ the t1-s or the 4's, i wonder how much grippier the t1-s are

If you have a dedicated winter rim/tire setup go for the grip.

I'm really thinking about going with the new Goodyear tire, the Eagle F1 GS-D3.

It looks NICE, has gotten awesome ratings... Decently priced too. And it's suposed to wear better than anything out there.

I’m finding ONLINE prices in the 140-160 range for the Proxes 4 tires in the 235/40/18 size.
One local store right by where I work quoted me 159, and that includes valve stems, mounting, balancing & installation on the car.
They sell the T1S for 198 so the 25% holds true here.

I’ll probably go with them unless I find something better.
