Anyone ever try fixing a ballast?

I bought a ballast in a junkyard and replaced my faulty ballast and now my lights work fine. My faulty ballast worked sometimes and did not work others.
If flickered and stayed one but a few minutes later went out.
The ballast has four screws holding it together. I unscewed the screws and there was a jelly-like material. Has anyone ever tried fixing a ballast or is it a lost cause? I didnt wanna start digging out the jelly untill i got more information on if this is even able to fix!

THANKS!

The HID unit is pretty sealed up in that gel. I have taken mine apart before when one of mine went bad. I guess you could always test each circuit to see if its bad.
