AMSOIL gear oil (6spd)= huge difference
Just some advice
Recently i replaced my gear oil in the CLS6 with AMSIOL Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid 5W-30 and what a big difference. the shifter is so much smoother and slips into gear so easy, you could shift with your finger. not only is it smoother you shift faster. before i would have a little resistance going into gears but after i changed the oil it is easy as a hot knike thru butter. The oil is around $15 a bottle at SK speed. It took 15 minutes to change, there was a drain plug on under the car and fill plug on top. for those who have a slight grind or resistance in the shifter i recommend you try it, you wont be dissappointed.

Make sure you filled the trans with the car level only until fluid began to drain from the trans fluid fill level bolt. It is smaller than the trans drain bolt and about 4-6 inches above it. The Trans does not take the amount of fluid Acura specifies. The manual trannies are all a little different when it comes to filling them, amount of fluid wise. If you just put in the specified amount you will probably over fill the trans and the overfill will foam and go through the weep hole into the bell housing. This happened to me after the Dealer over filled my trans slightly three times. The fluid can get on the clutch and contaminate it thus ruining it. It happened to me. There is a TSB from the ealers about over filling the trans. Check this out if you didnt already.

I got this form SK speed in Long island. i dont know where might sell it in your area, i guess call or go to the website.
i just removed the drain plug from the bottom and filled it thru a drain plug at the top. the plugs have a square head similar to a hex key. some one told me how much to put in and thats what i did.

FYI, That is not the proper procedure! Even in the Acura Service manual it says to remove the small, 8mm or 10mm regular bolt 4-6 inches above the trans drain bolt you are talking about above. You only fill the trans until fluid starts to pour out of the small hole where the 8mm or 10mm regular bolt was. let excess drain then replace the small bolt, then replace the large fill bolt on top of the trans. you mentioned above. I promise you, I have $4K missing from my pocket to prove that you will regret not doing this correctly if you just dumped the (improperly) specified amount in. Just trying to do you a favor.

I dont want to give some wrong info on something about there car,so who ever attempts to do this check the procedure that you feel safer doing. JPROY thanks for correcting if that is the right procedure.

It will work just fine even if you filled the trans until fluid was pouring out of the top large fill bolt. The problem wont come until either your Input shaft seal starts to leak profusely, you get tons of fluid leaking out of the bell housing, or worst case scenario, your clutch gets contaminated. If the clutch gets fluid on it, it will be ruined and will not hold against the pressure plate and will slip all the time worse than if your clutch were beginning to go out.

Thanks jproy, I always wondered why after about 2 qts. my level check hole started overflowing. I've wasted a few qts. over the years trying to comply w/ the specs. Glad that each time I figured f#@k it and just buttoned it up.

I'm going to change my own manual trans. fluid soon and i'm going to try the AMSoil. I'm going to follow the Service Manual which states:
-Remove the check bolt and check for fluid coming out;
-If a small amount of fluid comes out, reinstall the check bolt;
-If no fluid comes out, remove the filler bolt and slowly add trans. fluid until it starts to run out of the check bolt. When it stops reinstall the check bolt and the filler bolt;
My question is what's the reason for adding more fluid until it leaks out of the check bolt?
Also, once the fluid stops coming out of the check bolt and you tighten the bolt back up, what's next. The manual stop's there. I'm guessing then you remove the drain bolt and drain all the fluid. What's the process for refilling properly? Thanks,

To Check the trans fluid
-Remove the check bolt and check for fluid coming out;
-If a small amount of fluid comes out, reinstall the check bolt;
-If no fluid comes out, remove the filler bolt and slowly add trans. fluid until it starts to run out of the check bolt. When it stops reinstall the check bolt and the filler bolt;
To completely replace the trans fluid
-remove drain bolt and drain all fluid
-remove filler bolt
-replace drain bolt once all fluid has drained
-remove the check bolt
-fill with new trans fluid unitl it barley leaks out of the check bolt hole
-If a small amount of fluid comes out, reinstall the check bolt;
-If no fluid comes out, pour more fluid in until it does
-let the check bolt hole drain off unil it stops
-install the check bolt
-reinstall the filler bolt
-enjoy

I've done two trans changes myself and always put in the specified amount in the manual and havent had any issue. I did make sure to let the fluid drain completely and even tilted the car a little to make sure it all ran out.
I actually was planning on going back to Honda trans fluid, because I dont notice a huge difference with the GM fluid. Right after changing the fluid I noticed smoother engagement, but that was also comparing it to Honda fluid with 30k on it. I might try Amsoil next time, depending on how much more it is compared to Honda fluid.

The Honda fluid is useless. I have gone with the old and new Honda fluid and noticed no improvement. When I switched the GM synchromesh, WOW, what an improvement. Much better/smoother gear engagement. Been using it for 20,000 miles with no problems.

so do you like the gm trans oil or amsoil and how much better is it compared to the honda?

Need some quick help...
Car is jacked up and i'm ready to drain & re-fill the 6speed trans. fluid. I'm pretty sure i have located the drain and check bolt. What did you use to remove the larger drain bolt? It's sort of an indented square...
Also, the manual talks about a filler bolt under the hood, but i only see the cap where the trans fluid is. Is that just on the autos?
Thanks,
