Amsoil 0w-20...? 03-CL 6speed

Im wondering if I should use 5w-20 instead of the 0w-20 I already bought; either way I'm using Amsoil.

I only care about getting my car to preform the max potential. Im not as concerned with millage between changes. I bought the oil from a distributor who ran the specs on my car and recommended the 0w over the 5w but I know he makes a few more $ on the 0w. I live in Missouri so it does get kind of cold and I drive my car hard. Down sides? Up sides? What do you guys think? Who runs Amsoil in their MT's and what do you use?

I also bought the engine cleaner which they told me to use prior to the change to clean out the gunk. I was instructed to poor it into the crankcase and let the car idle for 15mins, shut it off and proceed with the oil change. Any advice regarding that?

Hook it up guys! And happy Thanksgiving!!

The only difference is on cold start up. If it gets really cold definitely use the 0w-20. The engine cleaner sounds like a good idea. I would run a little clean oil through after the old oil is drained out.

If I remember right 0-W20 is acceptable for cold starts down to -40 degree F. At the other end it's 60 or 80F, not sure. I'd say with Amsoil your pretty safe either way.

I use regular 5w20 as per the manual. Every 7.5K miles.

It does get fairly cold here but not for the duration of time (25k miles) Amsoil allows between oil changes. Having said that I am truly interested to know if when it gets hot 0w will have a negative effect on anything.

When you say "run" clean oil through after the cleaner, what exactly do you mean? Are you saying use cleaner, drain all oil, refill with clean oil and run it through for a few mins, then drain again and then refill again for completion?

Thanks

Yeah, I do that as well. I picked up the 0w-20 based on what I was told by the Amsoil guy who based his recommendation off specs (specific to the j32a2) from the Amsoil website. Can you think of any reason why 5w is "better" than 0w?

thanks fuzzy

You are correct about the cold starts and the "other end" is actually what I am curious about. I mean, yeah, 0w-20 for when its cold but this oil will supposedly last 25k miles, by which time it will no longer be cold and the temps will have entered "the other end" (60+).

I agree with your "pretty safe" comment as well. ...we'll see...

Thanks Chuck

Just use 0-20 its practically the same as the 5-20 weight oil when hot. If your not tracking your car then your going to be okay keeping oil temps along side those of coolant temps if not a little higher.

No oil viscosity provides enough protection at cold start up but they all do a really good job of "thinning" out to about 10cs, cold start is critical so just go with 0-20, its usually more expensive. As of now im going 5-20

I mean just pour a little oil in and let it run through and out before filling it up. Running it with new oil then drainging it out again is not necessary.
