almost lost control of the car

so i'm at school, skyline, and there's a cl in front of my parked cl. his window was rolled down so i say nice car and get in my car. so he drives off 'cause he's in my way. i had no idea where he went so i go and mind my own. i eventually see him and i try to catch up but there's this stupid truck who drives really slow, and it was a one lane street. so it finally splits into two and i stomp the gas and i see this cop in the other direction so i stop the brakes. i was going 60-65 and when i broke the tail end started to sway. why the hell did that happen? and also it seemed like my rear wheels locked because i heard my tires skip. isn't the vsa supposed to stop that from happening??? i was also on a very slight turn. i was on sneath ave. for you bay area folks.

You need to learn how to drive.

What they both said. VSA is an aid, not a cure all.

were you front tires turned a little when you hit the brakes? Unweighting the rear end and causing it to sway out? Just wondering

Drivers schools/Events are great places to get to know how your car handles in extreme conditions in a safe environment.

Maybe it only felt like you were losing control. If you really were, wouldn't the cop have reacted?

Nobody can even come close to a calling themselves a great driver unless they have almost absolute control over stepping the tail out and keeping it here (or bringing it back in without fishtails and a minimum of regrip disturbance.) If you haven't tracked or autocrossed, I seriously suspect that you're simply unaware of what truly great driving is, gmilian. That's the reason why when I get the chance I go on and on trying to get people interested in attending these things.

Considering both the massiveness of the car and the ease with which trouble can be powered into, I'd almost say attending an event where advanced driving techniques can be learned should be a prerequisite for owning a CL-S.

Seriously, the situation you painted is that of classic braking oversteer. VSA is supposed to help you to a degree, and the very fact that you didn't crash probably means that it did do its job to save your ass. It probably wasn't pretty, but few electronic aids ever operate transparently (aka "pretty", aka "smoothly integrated into the behaviour of the car as to be undetectible and assuring the driver that nothing abnormal is occuring"). In contrast, most purely mechanical systems are transparent (LSD) as are some electro-mechanical systems (ATTS and electronic locking differentials).
