TO All Automatic CL Owners

How many of you guys are getting rid of your cars due to all the transmission problems. Right now i am at almost 92k miles and i am kinda of scared after reading all the horror stories with everyone's tranny's. I recently had mine replaced at around 85k miles and the car seems to be running good. I tried going to a dealer and the dam guys trying taking me really bad on a price to trade in. They wanted to give me 6500 and my car has all of the options except for navi and is in good condition. Are these value's really dropping that much?

Nissan offered me $7500 for mine on a trade. I am definately selling it within the next couple weeks. Partly because of the tranny and partly because I need a 4 door car.

I was going to post my goodbye post today when I ran across this post...
I traded my 01 cl-s Friday. I had 91k miles and the tranny was making odd sounds. I got $9k for my trade and took it!

I am not suggesting that anyone get rid of their car, because I loved mine! However I do not trust the acura engineers with these transmissions. I opted to get out before the 100k final.

Good luck with your decision.

Guys, Its not that hard to get your tranny replaced under warranty after 100k. Several members have done it, including myself.

1)Take it to Acura
2) They diagnose the problem
3) They notice you are over 100k
4) They then call Honda and explain.
5) New tranny in 3 days (in my case.)

As long as you have service records (oil changes, any trans work, and maintanence through Acura) you're golden.

117xxx and counting, not selling.....

It worked out for you yeah, but you know how many bad dealers are out there? Dealers that laugh you out the door if you try this. The 4 by me are like that. I'm 900 miles out of warranty & they wouldn't replace my side motor mount. They quoted me $228 with tax.

And to be on topic, I got rid of my 02 with 17K miles on it cause I didnt want to deal with the tranny. Got a 6mt.

If it was as easy as that, most people would keep there CL.... Storys i've read here are most different.. and every dealer is going to deal with blown 100K+ trannys every differently then everyone else... a big YMWV

ya just after reading all of these tranny horror stories of people going through 4 of them already and stories of barely going out of warranty then have them fail makes me want to get rid of the car and just buy something else. I just wished i wouldn't get screwed so bad on a trade in.

i remember that i once read a thread on the Lemon law applied to our cars due to the faulty transmissions. from what i read i do think that those of us on the third or fourth ones, we have an argument to use in order to lawfully get it fixed by Acura. anyone know a lawyer of some kind?

btw, i'm 65k miles in and on my third transmission.

Traded mine in a month ago with 81k+ on the clock. I miss the comfortable seats and ride. Everytime I see a CL my heart drops. I think later on in life i'll buy an 03 6mt for part of my 'classic' car collection

Add me to the list, I have 77k miles on my 01CLS.

I usually have the worse luck with cars, so it's definitly going before 100k, question is... what to get to replace it.
we just moved into a house, so now i'm extra broke.

I have an '03 CL-S auto. The original tranny was amazingly tight and quick shifting. I was 'convinced' to opt for a 2nd tranny at 22K miles simply due to parking on hills and the tranny jerking into gear (even if I set the parking brake before letting off of the brake). That tranny howled / whined (softly like a supercharger whine) and was told that the noise was accepatble (BS). Went into another Acura dealer and had that one replaced with the 3rd tranny. Now at 62K miles the whining is beginning appearing and is starting to exhibit erratic downshifts going downhill decelerating from 4th to 3rd or 3rd to 2nd. My dealer will do another swap (4th tranny) before 100K miles which I'll get at 85-90K miles to prove it out. After that?
Don't have your tranny replaced unless you absolutely have to.

On the 2nd trans at 80,000 miles. Will probably make it go away before 100,000 for a GS300.

What were some of the conditions present as far as those who have had replacements done under warranty after 100k? I am at 85k right now and questioning whether it needs to be sold before that time. In my case, the tranny was completely replaced at 62k already...thinking about 03 6MT w/ navi......

All of you guys getting offered only 9,000 on your trade in are getting shafted. Head to CARMAX , they offered to buy my car for 11,000 (01 type s with 73,000) even if I didnt buy a car from them.

And this car will be gone at 99,000 miles! Too many horror stories to think about for a car that otherwise is bullitproof

Just curious if anyone has had to replace the tranny after installing a tranny cooler on it. I just bought my 03 CL-S auto with 60K on the clock. I ordered a tranny cooler for it right away. Still waiting for it to arrive to install, but wondering if it'll really increase the tranny life or do I just have no option but to expect the tranny to go before I hit 100K?

I'm crossing 107,000 miles tomorrow, still on 1st tranny and runs really well. No issues. I guess I got lucky buying my car that never had that problem.

see whats weird on my car is that my orginal tranny didn't have any symptoms of being bad but when i saw the recall i took it in and they inspected it and said it needed to be replaced. Once again this tranny has been doing fine with no problems. Just really confused because i like the car and it is comfortable but just scared with only have 8k miles on the warranty left.

Good to hear, Green. Gives me some hope that I won't be struggling with approachig the 100K barrier in the future. Do you have a tranny cooler installed? My tranny feels great as of now, I just hope it stays that way. Funny thing is all my past cars besides my first car ever (72 Buick Skylark) were manuals, but I felt like going with something different this time and then after buying the car I hear about all these transmission issues.

I wonder if there's any companies out there that can beef up the stock tranny? The only mod that Comptech suggests with the supercharger is the tranny cooler. Anyone know?

I've got over 110K on my original transmission and I drive it like I stole it most of the time. I took it for the recall at about 80K and they installed the "2nd gear oil squirter kit" to the existing transmission.

I see lots of folks on here with tranny probs, but has there ever been a pole on here to determine what percentage DO blow up?

Are the trannies really that bad or do we just here more from the vocal minority?

Try looking in here... https://acurazine.com/forums/acurazine-clubs-meets-15/chicago-cruisin-66-car-show-invite-181322/

I faintly remember a poll from a long time ago.

it seems from the polls that mostly cl Type s are the ones with all the tranny problems?

No tranny cooler, just the jet oil kit. I can feel when the torque convertor is doing its thing so I'm not afraid of it breaking any time soon. I do like to romp around in SS mode sometimes and still have no issues. If you want some piece of mind you can get a tranny cooler for your car, or you can head over to Dr. Evil if you want your tranny bulletproof. It's just personal preferance for me, I won't be worried until I decide what I want to do with the tranny. I know when I install the CT supercharger I will buy the tranny cooler and other meters to keep an eye on the engine and the parts that work on it. But for now I just want some nice MTX bass pounders in my trunk with a DVD screen/player

I hear ya. I don't do much with the SS mode, but every once and a while I throw it in and just bang through them, but usually already at cruising speed and go down to 3rd. I live in Arizona and have bumper to bumper traffic on my commute to and from work, so even without performance in mind, the tranny cooler is probably a good idea just for that. Thanks for the info.
