AEM question

when it gets colder, will it get louder?

If yes, by how much?

Also how do i maintain a intake, do i have to do anything?..does it involve taking off the splashguards?

Also has anyone taken out their foglights for better performance?

Thanks.

You need to puchase a cleaner and lubriacation kit for washing and reoiling the filter when necessary

When it gets colder it does get louder, by how much is a good question. I can tell the difference between a 50 degree night and a 100 degree day.

If the filter gets soaked a lot from washing the car -- water can get down on the filter, you might want to by the cleaner/oiler kit.

You remove the splash guard to get at the element to clean it. If you can keep the water off of it, it should last a long time between cleanings.

When I looked around at all of the BS about the K&N not filtering, I did notice that some Acura NSX (and Integra) people did not keep the filter well lubed causing some of the dealers to notice a bit of "dirt" getting into the system (the $hit on the throttle plate revealed this) due to lack of oiling. Everyone said to keep the filter well oiled.

1. The amount of time between cleaning/re-oiling. I am counting down to 6-months. When the time is up -- I'm going to see just how dirty it is. If it is relatively dirty, I'll just bump up the change time. I think it really depends on who dirty and dusty the area is where you drive.

2. The wash "thing". My detailer (I had one hand wash from him -- I was trading computer favors) uses a bit more pressure than I like and the water that I noticed getting into the filter was from the hood crack. I only put a light mist on the car (Zaino city) and don't need the monsoon treatment. He popped the hood to dry the entire inside of the engine compartment and I noticed water running down the pipe. I plan on adding a rubber ring with a piece of neoprene hanging down from it to act as a low point to "divert" the water away from the lower pipe and filter element. I think this is the biggest cause for concern!!!

Try to keep the water you put on the hood to a minimum -- I only need a gentle mist and it works for me. I also notice that the pipe doesn't seem to get wet enough to have any drips running down it!

Finally -- I did have my detailing guy "blast" the wheel wells since they were so dirty -- it didn't seem to mess the filter up (but I will know more when I inspect).

(That's all I know for now...)

thanks a bunch ericl,

so i guess i should stay away from high pressure car wash's?

What if i wrap a tire around the top part of the intake before a car wash, to avoid getting water in from the hood?..would this workout good?

And as for the under carwash thing, i guess i'l have to stay away....

Hahahha, that was was funny BSK181. Anyway, the filter should be cleaned according to driving conditions and mileage. Any performance shop should carry the K&N filter cleaner fluid and oil. I'd say if the conditions were bad like ny,nj,ct, I would clean every 20-25,000 miles. That way it would run at peak performance and filter out all the dirt.

NO WAY, NEVER EVER. NO CAR WASH WILL EVER TOUCH MY CAR. I wash and wax by hand once a week. I have driven through really hard rain and puddles and I have never had a problem with the cai. I don't rev the engine beyond 3000rpm in the rain just to be on the safe side. I drove from NY to Virginia in a rainstorm 2 weeks ago and yes the filter does get wet but no water gets into the pipe. I actually took the pipe off the throttle body and checked inside and it was completely dry. But when I do my get my new pipe I will install the valve.

I'm probably even lazier than you.

I go through touchless car washes all the damn time. Once in a while I'll take it somewhere to get washed, but the easiest thing for me is usually the gas station car washes. It's a pain in the ass to wash your car when you've been having water restrictions that don't let you wash your car unless it's between something like 5-7 AM on certain days of the week only. I don't even remember the exact times.

No CAI as of yet, but I remember reading comments from many people saying that the car washes, even under the car, were no problem with a CAI so I figured I wouldn't have any problems either if I decided to get it.

I do, but only in the winter time.

When the car is ENCRUSTED with a 1/2 inch coating of road salt, there isn’t really a way to clean it yourself when the temp is 10 Degrees outside.

My CAI has been in about 4-Months (5,000 miles).
I guess it’s about time to take a look and see how dirty the filter has gotten.

I would say just idle SLOWLY over the “under” wash and don’t rev the engine too much.

And watch out for those tire guides.
While not nearly as bad as a fully AUTO system, they can probably still scratch our wheels.
If the single guide is on the drivers side, make sure you stay to the right and hit the tire guide on the INSIDE of the tire.

amir, if you have bypass... your safe. if you dont... GET ONE.

My filter is SOAKED after even a hand wash.

in either case... turn off the car as soon as you get parked in the wash. (assuming this is a stationary touch free... which is all you should use)
