AEM CAI and bypass

I was curious how many people here in California...particularly bay area use a bypass valve on their CAI? And why...obviously i know the obvious reason...but I wanna know like for safety of mind or what? Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Wsup P..... I'm in San Diego and have the bypass for a couple of reasons:

1- Peace of Mind
2- I might be moving back home in a couple of years (Jersey) and I know it can rain pretty bad out there for days at a time......

Ha ha ha... worried about your intake too huh? Same here. But I'm going to wait until I get the intake before I decide whether or not to put on a bypass. For now, it's summer. So who cares?

When winter draws nearer, I'll seriously consider removing the intake. You know, drive through a light rain, remove the intake, look at how damp the inside of the pipe is. Then you can kinda guess if you're running the risk of hydrolocking.

Then again, mattg has a point. It barely rains here, even in winter.

Let me know what you think.

By the way, when are you installing your intake? You gonna do it yourself or have someone do it for you? I would love to do it myself, but I'm afraid of f*cking up, as I am prone to do.

San Diego bypass

I got the bypass but now I removed it and put a silicon tube in its place. But I think it's good to have in case I move out. However, you don't get hydrolock from a damp filter. You need the car to enter a big fat puddle and have the entire filter be immersed and take in a shit load of water. Moisture is not a major problem, it's always in the air and part of the mixture.

You're probably right. A wet or damp filter probably wouldn't have enough water to hydrolock an engine. And yep, moisture is definitely not a problem. As you said, that's part of the atmosphere we live in.

However, you don't have to take in "a shit load of water" to hydrolock. You just need about 10 teaspoons worth of water to guarantee a hydrolock. My calculations are shown in this thread.

By the way, what kind of silicon tube do you mean? Do you mean you just rejoined the two pieces of the intake where the bypass used to be?

at stock height, you would have to drive thru 15" of water to submerge the filter. only then would it suck water

Sorry, I meant that your CAI just needs to gulp down 10 teaspoons of water. No reference intended on how deep water your car would need to be swimming in.

Hey waz up Derek! I got my CAI installed last night...it took from about 9pm to 12pm. Couldn't get the bumper off, but we managed to get the resonator box out fine without removing it. I decided not to install the bypass valve because right now it is summer and I don't have much to fear. As for who installed the intake...it was mostly my friend (he used to be heavy into the import scene and done almost all my other friend's intakes and spring installs). If you want he might be willing to do it for you for a price...but you have to remember...he's not a shop, so warranty wise...that's a little questionable. But unlike a shop...u know what's he's doing and if he scratches or breaks something...at the very least you will know unlike the shops who won't tell you shit or let you watch them install it. I will post pics of the install later once I get it and those who are going to the BBQ June 8 will get a chance to see. As far as raining...yea that's what made me reconsider the bypass valve. My friend done tons of intake installs and has never once installed a bypass valve. I don't know...Well thanks everybody for your response...you've all been great help! Have a wonderful day!
