Acura May Add Small SUV
January 10, 2003
Acura, Honda's luxury division, may expand its SUV lineup, the Dow Jones Newswires reports, citing Tom Elliott, an executive vice president of Honda's U.S. sales unit.
"One of the areas we would look at for Acura is maybe another SUV," Elliott said.
Acura has been successfully selling a midsize SUV called the MDX since 2000, but it's the only SUV in its lineup. The additional vehicle, Elliott said, would have to be smaller than the MDX.
"For the lack of a better term," Elliott said, he sees "an entry-level Acura SUV that could appeal to younger, more performance-oriented consumers."
Even through the vehicle would look like an SUV, Elliott said it would be "more sporty and stylish." No debut date for such a vehicle was revealed.

Actually I think this is a great idea and here is why they are doing it.
THe RX330 not having a 3rd row seat has betrayed how Lexus and Acura are thinking about the strategy of SUVs now. The RX300 and the MDX were competitors last year. But when the GX470 came out, it now moved as the competitor for the MDX. So I see as the RX330 being competing with this possible, new Acura-smal-SUV, whatever it may be called. Makes sense especially when we can safely guess that the next MDX out in 1.5 years, will grow slightly.

The Pilot was derived primarly from the MDX frame no?

screw all the bullshit
Why doesn't Acura just cut all of the crap and build an SUV that can compete with A Hummer, or that bigass Sahara monster Mercedes. :wackit: That would put them at the top of the market.

More than likely it'll be based on the CR-V, but then again, you really can't rule out the possibility they'd wouldn't base it on the Element since they share a common Civic platform.
