Acura CL 3.0 (1997)(Stock) vs. Ford V6 Mustang (2002)(Stock)

The Race Hasn't Officially Gone Down Yet But It Will Sometime During The Week. I Want To Know What People Here Think The Results Will Be. For Those Of You Who Haven't Done Your Homework Or Just Don't Feel Like Looking It Up I Am Listing Some Basics About The Car(s) You Should Know (Though I Would Think Everyone Would Know About The CL Model Already).

Ford 2002 Mustang
Engine: 3.8L V-6
Horsepower: 193 @ 5550
Torque: 228 @ 2800
Base Model Curb Weight (approx lbs.): 3114(3)

Acura CL 3.0
Engine: SOHC VTEC 3.0 V6
Horsepower: 200 @ 5600
Torque: 195 @ 4800
Base Model Curb Weight (approx lbs.): 3219

I Just Looked Up The Weight Of The CL Today And Was Surprised By How Heavy It Is. I Don't Know If Any Of My Information Is Wrong And If It Is Please Correct Me But Both Cars Are Stock. Let Me Know What You Guys Think...

You should take him no problem. The stats don't show up in the performance for the mustang. It has very long gears in the auto as well. The Auto V6 mustang 99+ is a low 17 second car.

Glad To Know That You Guys Got The Faith. A Lot Of People (Like Local Friends) Think It Will Be Close. I'll Be Sure To Post The Results As Soon As We Race Sometime This Week. Also A Question For Racers, Which Do You Prefer On The CL 3.0: A Turbo Or A SuperCharger? Just A Bit Curious On That And What Some Of The Upgrades People Have Taken With Various CL Models (Of Course I Am Looking More For 3.0 Upgrades But Any CL Model I Would Love To Hear About). Thanks For Your Replies!

a well driven 5 spd stang will give you a run for your money in the 1/4. Beyond that you should pull him though.

figure mid to upper 15s if driven well for the stang, that's in your car's territory. If it's an auto though he should be all yours.

Depends who's driving really and whether it's a 5speed or auto.

*I* have driven a stock 5speed into the 13s, yet some people can't row them any better than a 14.3-14.4...or worse.

If its an auto, you win. If its a stick, and the other guy can drive, you lose, no matter what speed range. The newer Stang V-6s have gone very low 15, and I think it was Evan Smith(incredible drag racer from MM&FF) who got high 14s out of it with only free mods.

30+TQ advantage(at way lower RPM), 1oo pounds lighter, and RWD, its really a no brainer to me. If he is a stick, and doesn't spank you, then he can't drive.

Dave

Good luck and post the results.

Obviously That Plays A Major Part, His Car Is An Automatic So That The Question Of Whether Or Not It Is Can Be Eliminated.

OK - first we need to see if the Ford STARTS!!! I had a Mustang GT and it was beyond a lemon, it was a lime! There's a good reason I bought an Acura (actually there were two). But I digress. Back to the matter at hand, if he's got an automatic, you're good to go. If he's got a stick, then it may come down to true skill (always a better race in my opinion). As for me, I hope and believe the Acura will win. Good luck to you, and beat that Mustang!

Results On The Race Will Be In By The End Of The Long Weekend (Sorry For Delays, Scheduling A Good Place Where We Can't Get Any Speeding Tickets And No Traffic In The Way Can Be A Problem During The Week With Work And All). Also If Anyone Is In Chicago (Or The General Chicago Land Area) And Into Racing Please Contact Me Via The Private Messaging Service On This Website.

Okay, Finally Got Around To Racing. To My Disappointment My CL 3.0 Lost To The Auto 2002 V6 Mustang. It Was Close As We Went About Even Off The Line And Then The Mustang Pulled On Me And Then I Began To Pull On The Mustang But Not Enough To Win The Race. However I Would Say We Raced Between 1/8 - 1/10 Of A Mile. We Did Not Get A Full Quarter Mile Race In So It Is Possible That I Would Beat Him On A Quarter Mile Race. We're Trying To Get A Good Location Without Having To Hit The Tracks To Race. If We Get A Good Quarter Mile Race In I Will Post The Results. As For The Current Race Results He Hit The Finish When The Front Of My Car Was About Half Way Up On His.

I thought they were too, it was quite a let down. Guess most of the future races will be based on how each of us decide to upgrade.

Well, I am surprised you lost to an auto V6, but they aren't slow, and it was close. Godd run, and I say go ahead an take it to the track, its much safer, and you get aslip to share with the rest of us.

Yeah, I actually am going to try and take him to the track this weekend if the weather is permitting. Guess you can't win them all. After we split our ways on upgrades things might change a bit as he is heading in the direction of a supercharger while I was more interested in Turbo kits. Anyways if he agrees to take it to the tracks I'll let you guys know how things turn out.

You should have no problem...
I have a '99 2.3CL (5spd) and I never saw the rear qtrpanel on my fiance's dad's V6 stang. He is SOOOOO V8 this, V8 that...I can't tell you how good it felt. :bigclap:

If it's modded a bit (i.e. intake, FULL exhaust (and I mean FULL), and a little extra spark), and you're running good fuel, your CL runs good, AND the stang is an automatic, you should be able to do it.
You WILL have to drive damn near perfectly.
The first time I ran against him, we were neck and neck. The second was when I got him (just under 1 car length). Then we raced again and I had him until I shifted 3rd to early...from then on it was him.
Now, as far as a Stick Stang, it will just about be a driver's race (meaning he will have to do some sloppy racing to lose).

Exactly...
with your stock 2.2, your ONLY hope is that the stang driver stalls (terribly) off the line, or that he shifts from 1st to 4th and doesn't realize it.!!
