? about Tints for Black CL owners

Since I'm giving my car in for the new '02 TL-S steering wheel, I am also considering getting tints.

Since I've never gotten tints before, I am fairly clueless here .. so I'm looking for is suggestions on tints (35%?) that might look good on a NighthawkBlack ext. w/ Ebony int.

Also, has anyone gotten those Silver tints? You know the ones that act almost like one sided mirrors? How do those look?

Price range?

I have 35% on all my glass except front windsheild. In most states thats as dark as you can legalt go. The silver in most states is illegal, it also is generally a lower quality tint. Make suer you use a good quality tint 3M is a good one or else it will purple real quick. Good luck.

I got the darkest you could all the way around. I used Lumar tint, which is the best for the money. I don't personally think that silver tint would look good on black But some people might not like the way my windows look painted. So to each his own. Just get what you think will look best. It costed me 175 to have them all done but the front.

guys,i own my own tinting business.there are many great films out there ,other than 3m and llumar.i have used them and others, but i use madico almost exclusively.they have many tints that will NOT fade to blue or purple.also, they shrink very well,so doing the back glass on the new or old cl is no problem.i personally like madico's onyx film, which is a metallized film (for maximum heat rejection) but has a great soft smoke appearance, a rarity in metal films.i have it on my silver cls and it looks great on black as well.email me with any questions on tint.i feel like somewhat of an expert in this area.i will rely on you guys for help with the exhaust and suspension questions!!by the way,i am the artist formally known as "EX S2000 OWNER".my screen name is tintboy everywhere else,so i switched here as well.thanks to everyone for their help.

by the way, shrinking a film allows installers to do windows with curves(such as back windows, and side windows on other cars)in one sheet of film, rather than two.although experienced installers can make two pieces almost totally appear as one.
and on a personal note ,from a window tint installer,i do not like silver films on black cars.tried it on my prelude sh,took it off quick!!

I have .28 metallized tint side/back - although .35 is technically legal limit for most states, generally you won't get pulled over for .28 because it transmits enough light to be seen inside. For a black car I think the degree of tint is especially important for the aesthetics (not to mention heat protection in hot/sunny weather). See below for .28 metallized...

'01 CL Type S NAV, Black/Black, Comptech headers, springs, .28 tint, Solaris hi-beams, Pilot remote fogs, Zaino faithful; CAI (Xephyr) on order; Comptech sways, Koni shocks to come.

tintboy .. thanks for the pointers. Which lasts longer - one sheet or two? Also, what is a good deal for a job like this ($$$) .. so that I dont get ripped off? Do you know any shops here in the midwest (WI/IL/IN/MI) that you could reccommend? Thanks!

Do not get metallic tints because it will mess up your radio reception. It happened to a friend of mine in his 2001 TL.

As for me, I have 20% black tints on the side mirrors and 35% on the rear window. It looks really good on a black car. BTW, I have a black 99TL with a lot of goodies.

tintboy? any opinions on this comment .. sounds pretty serious. So Blackshadow, what brand did you get? I assume 20% and 35% are just the degree, and 3M and Lumar are brands .. also, how much did it cost you?

YES!certain metal films can cause difficulty with radio reception.you can ask the tint shop ,or if they don't know,i guarantee you the manufacturer or distributor will know.my experience is this:my wife has metal film on her tl,no problems with radio.i just put mine on saturday(yesterday)with no reception problems.but once again,if i didn't make it clear, certain manufacturers(including Llumar)do sell films that could interfere.platinum plus(their silver film), ATR, and centaur are three of their popular metal films.ask your tint shop which is ok.
Now,concerning the back window in one or two pieces:i just finished mine yesterday, took out the rear deck so i didn't have to cut out around the third brake light, and did it with relatively no problem in one piece.it is entirely ok to do the glass in two pieces, just as long as you cannot see the seaming of the two from the outside.sometimes on certain vehicles it is actually better to do the back glass in two pieces.even though you may be able to do it in one, certain vehicles make it difficult to get one big piece into place cleanly, with minimal dust dots.the film should last just as long either way as long as it bonds with the glass properly and the owner of the car doesn't use ANY ammonia based cleaner .that 's why you see back windows purple and bubbled up.thanks guys!!!

I have dual layer window tints...the first layer is 50-state "legal" (factory 35%, no tint on the windshield) and the other is 15% including the front windshield. It seems illegal, but I have never heard of anyone getting pulled over for dark tint. It's reasonable because it does gets hot in the summer...plus it looks PHAT! I would assume that the dual tint would equal about one layer of 10%. Whenever I fly pass a cop, they give me a thumbs up instead of pulling me over, hehehe...I see plenty of black luxury cars rolling around here with LIMO tint on ALL windows (MBZ SLK320, Lexus GS400, Acura NSX, BMW M3, even a Ferrari F355), cops don't really care unless it's on a riced out Dodge Neon or something. I'll post pictures of my car later on this week

Oh yea, the tint is made by a company called Johnson, I had it installed at a local motorsports/body shop...total came out to be $250 (200+50 for front)

Tint Boy,

Finding a tint shop in the North is a bit of a challenge. There is one a few miles from here but the only warranty they give it two years and will do the car for $99. Sounds cheesy to me and I need to find a more upscale joint.

My question is this: Should we worry about warranties? How hard it is to take off without damaging anything if it does "go bad"?

I just got off the phone with my dealership and he said no to my wood steering wheel and the tints. Said, the guy who I spoke with friday when I set up my appointment was a temp and didnt know that the TL-S steering wheel is not suited for the CL and it is illegal for them to install it on my car till they receive specs from acura on how to order the right airbag parts/configuration for the CL .. and same for tints, they will not pass my car on to their glass/body shop as tints are illegal. I was like how about 35% .. he said borderline, and we do not want to have anything to do with that. I was like fine.

Can someone recommend a good shop for tints here in the Chicago/South Bend, IN area?

Mucho gracias!!!!!
