About CAI and water.....

Ok i was just thinking, i know that you are not suppose to run into big puddles with the cold air intake installed. But what if you go through a car wash? (I dont) Wouldnt the water that shoots from under the car go into the air filter and suck it up? It just shooting it rigt into it. Any one worried about that?

I go through the car wash all the time. No problems.

It a column of water that u should be afraid of. You would have to fully submerge the filter to ruin your engine.

When your car is in idle, it wont make enough pressure to suck the air. If you ever go through a big puddle of water, just make sure you are not hitting your gas. You will be ok.

Very good point Spiro!

I guess the only time you get into trouble is if you are driving in a flood situation, and even then, it is very hard for the engine to suck up a large volume of water, upstream!

and just so u know, when your car is in the car wash its not on, its just in nutral. and the CAI would have to be fully submerged to ruin your engine, a couple drops of water wouldnt even go through the filter

I don't know about the car wash, but I finally wanted to see how the AEM would respond to a big blast of water. So I cleaned the car first (didn't want to sandblast the car with high pressure water + dirt -- this is BAAAAAd). Once car was clean, I put a pretty good stream into the grill and on top of the hood and front fenders.

I noticed that there was a good amount of water going down the AEM's tube towards the K&N -- it definitely gets wet.

However, the good points made above relate to the filter being submerged vs. just wet, and the other point is to not STOMP on the throttle if the car is going over puddles or in the wash, etc.

You should be ok, unless there is someone inside your car redlining the engine while it's washed (flooded?) (j/k).

Yesterday, we had a good 5-7" of downpoor from what is left from Allison Storm. I had to drive for 30 miles (1h45 mins!) and I was going like crazy hitting puddles of water and having splashes as high as 6ft!
Even at one time I pulled over at dunken donuts to relax a bit... from the worries of hydrolocking my CLS engine.

Making the story short I drove through a lot of water the only thing I was making sure I was doing when I hit a 6"+ puddle is that I was braking rather than hitting the gas and I was going like 20-30 max. Visibility was almost nil too.

I survived.
