96 Impala SS
It's one of my favorite cars ever, and I've never raced one but I know I could beat one stock-vs-stock in my dad's '97 Z28.
(considering they have the same LT1 V8 and my Z28's a LOT lighter).
I love those Impys though. So sexy.
-J
FYI - there used to be a guy nicked CherryBomb over in the Camaroz28 forums with a beauty of an Impy that had nitrous and the whole nine yards. He was in the 11s last I heard.

Back to my point though, what's he got to lose? I'll race anybody, I don't get embarrassed. If I lose, so be it. It's just fun to race every now and then.

What type of mods will make this beast run 10's??? Please tell me a 150 shot of NOS is one of them! Since it's essentially the vette engine, it'd have to first be modded to run the stock vette 1/4's (around 13.2) and then drop another 2 to 3 seconds. Plus it weighs significantly more -- I'm not flaming -- just very curious.

OK, I can weigh in on this one.
I had a 95 SS in Dark Cherry. It had a Borla cat back, headers, a pulley kit, different thermostat setup, CAI and a Power Programmer.
That's about 2K US$, with me doing all of the work except the Borla.
Never had it Dyno'd, never to the strip. The guy that I sold it to lives up the block and has the engine in pieces, and is doing an old fashioned hot rod job on it. He is expecting 375 - 400hp when he is done. If memory servers me, that is about what Lingenfelter can do to it for you, and they ask about 10K.
The car was a different kind of fast. Had loads more low end grunt than my CLS. Very stable at high speeds. I would bet that in 1/4 mile they are about the same when stock.
As modified, mine was very quick, and the CLS would not stand a chance.
But you all know I don't street race.
The most amazing thing about that car was that you could throw it around corners as if it was a much smaller car. I guess that comes from it's SEO heritage. Millions of miles have been logged by Caprice police vehicles.
As for it being a "Vette Engine" or the same as the Z28, neither one of these is true. It is an LT1 small block Chev, rated at 260hp. Most car magazines commented that most delivered from chevy were closer to 285hp.
The LT1 engines in the z28 and previous generation corvettes are set up for lots more horsepower that the SS. I think that the vette and z28 were doing about 305 at the same time. I am sure you could look it up. Z28 SS even more, and some Firehawks are nastier than that.
I will say this, I bought mine in June of 95, and they were few and far between on the street. I got more people walking up to me in parking lots and in giving me thumbs up at stop lights than with any other car I've owned. I think it will prove to be a long time classic.
Since most of you guys love mods, the small block has more bolt on gizmos than you can shake a stick at. It was police invisible, never got a ticket or even a hard look, and the insurance was dirt cheap. ( for me )
Great car. Highly recommended.

Now the Corvette did have more power/torque out of it, but that's because the Corvette gets a different cam, and better intake and exhaust.
Btw, my dad owns a '97 Z28. 275 rated hp.

I thought they only brought that back in '97? That would be a year after the cool Impala left production to become the ugly gimp-mobile it is today.

Just came in this morning, and standing on top of someones new Impala in the parking lot are two geese, and a couple of piles of crap.
They have a nest in some of the nearby landscaping, and proably like the hig vantage point that the chevy provides.
Maybe the little piles are a comment on the new Impala styling.
