here's a story for ya...I foget what year civic it was, but basically it was somewhere around that year civic. My friends had an integra GSR engine and tranny they were going to put in the car since the GSR body was toast. So since the engine wasn't worth anything, they though it would be fun to blow it up. They tried first installing the GSR ecu to raise the reline and they beat on the car holding gears to some rediculous redline, that didn't do it. Downhifted to first at like 55 mph. That didn't do it. So they drove it around with no oil for a while and that didn't do it. So they they decided. To take off the airbox and shoot water right into the throttle body. Well the car just kept running and spitting out water from the exhuast, They had to keep the revs up a little or it would stall...but it took like 15 minutes to finally get the engine to seize. This engine had over 200k miles on it. I think they are pretty reliable.

It all depends on how the car has been driven and maintained.
If you buy it from someone who races every car he can, and beats the hell out of the car for the fun of it, you may end up with a few problems.
If you are lucky enough to aquire it from someone who babied it then you are less likley to run in to any major problems.
Good luck

OMG that was soooo funny greenmonster!!!
I still have my 95 Honda civic. I bought it new and have driven it 163K miles- The 92 is the same production run as the 95. The issues that I incurred were as follows:
1. CV joint boots split at 50K miles, I replaced the entire axle assembly on both sides as it was actually less expensive to do.
2. Exhaust pipe failure at 120K miles. Cracked right after the catalytic converter.
3. Exhaust manifold crack at 130K miles, then failure of the o2 sensor. Replaced with an aftermarket header and new o2 sensor at 140K.
4. Water pump bearing began to weap at 135K, replaced both water pump and timing belt.
5. Front rotors replaced at 135K
6. Muffler replaced at 159K.
This car still runs very strong with very little oil burn and I could easily put another 100K on it if I wanted to. I'm just sick and tired of the damn thing.
The for sale ad is complete cheese-ball but my friend seems to think that it will sell:

Things that you need to look out for are the CV joint boots, valve guide seal blow-by, front rotor warp, and the third gear syncro. You may also want to check the exhaust manifold for leaks too.
Also check and see if they changed out the timing belt and water pump. Timing belts last for a reccomended 90K miles, the water pump usually 120-150K tops.
Good luck!
