9 qts or 3 qts on ATF flush/change

My goal is to replace the current ATF with as high a percentage of new stuff as possible, while avoiding the powerflush that whacks our trannys. Call it a "flush", call it a "change", i want to know if 9qts (3 X 3) is neccessary or is just a drain n refill 1X with 2.75-2.9 qts enough?

Member fender4 quoted the now retired Jens as having intructions of:
1) drain; /then put in two qts, run 3-5 minutes, shift between reverse and drive; yes keep your foot on the BRAKE

2) repeat "1" three times, final fill is 2.75 qt.

Previous threads have a post by EricL stating:

"The flush requires the tech to remove ATF, then add new ATF, then run through a sequence of putting the car through the gears. This process is repeated a three times until the ATF is "almost" brand new (you never get rid of all of the old stuff).

The change is only one cycle -- you just remove some ATF, and add some."
EricL, did you mean the "change" is only 1X = 3 qts total?

I can't find it, but a seperate previous post I think said the 1X only results in about 70% old crap still in tranny, 30% new fluid in. 3Xs method said to result in 90% fresh new fluid "in", 10% old leftover.

My question is, 3Xs repeating to get the old ATF out and new in?
Or is 1X enough?

doding 3 times is best, even the dealer does it 3 times.

tranny summary (2001 cl-s)

at 20 k miles
changed by the 3x method (I am a synthetic nut) use only
this https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/atf.aspx

at 40 k

3 x method

at 60 k added comptech trans cooler did 3x method

at 65k added Acura's recall for the oil squirter

at 85 trans went out,, added new Acura's replacement trans

at 90k,, waited for break in period, did the 1x method (3qts)

but now I plan on doing the 1x method every oil change,, which for me is every 10k miles, filter every 5k ,, (again I'm a amsoil syn nut) and I use lab analysis.

My warranty is almost out and I'm trying to get my car to 200k. I believe the oil is not failing the trans but a poor design.

If your using Honda Z1 trans fluid change using the 3x method

3Xs was way better

1st time ATF coming out was "disgusting".
2nd time mixed.
3rd time much cleaner.

BTW fender4, mech asks if step one when you quoted Jens:

1) drain; /then put in two qts,...

Is that a typo? Did you mean to put 3qts?

Your empty sump holds between 2.2 and 2.7 qts.. My dip shows on the low side with 2 qts, if during the flush you feel better putting in 2.7 qts do it.. 2.7x 2.7x 2.7x then drain and only put in 2.7qts,, don't over fill for driving around also I recomend the trans cooler,, I was surprized hot much heat the trans generates,, but my trans broke anyway,, I drive 70 mph for 80 miles a day,, although I do v-tech it a couple times a day.. that's what it's there for.
