!7"x7" VS 18"x7" Difference in handling....

Will there be a noticeable difference between the handling of a 17x7 versus a 17x8.
i am changing wheels aftermarket wheels this week to a better offset ....also going from an incorrect 40mm to a closer 50mm offset

The reason you want 8" wide rims is because you can mount 235 tires on the rims. You are not suppose to mount 225 or 235 on 7" rims. 7" wide rims are made for small car like Civics.

I have had 235/45/17 on 17x7 for 10000 miles. The nitto 555 WILL mount on 7" rim according to their website and confirmed with on eof hteir engineers...

I'd go with the 17x8's. With wider tires you will get better grip.

If you got good streets and weather where you live... go for 18-19's... in Ny im going for 17's with a 225/45.. too many pot holes to deal with 18 or bigger....

18's are heavier however so if you want performance go with a light 17

Had 18" for 3 days, my dealer was kind enough to work with me and trading for 17's after driving on them for 200 Miles.(He sold my slightly used setup for more $$$used thatn he did to me new.) I wasnt willing to sacrifice the luxury ride. However, they originally sold me the wrong offset, the wheels will be changed this week to a 17x8

It seems to me that the solution is to go 17x7.5. With the 7.5 you have a width that is approved by every manufacturer I have come across for 235/45 17 tires. The difference between 40mm and 50mm should be night and day.

Ofcouse they "WILL" mount on 7", but is it safe to take that corner at 100mph without the tires coming off the rim. I dont' think so!!! Look below. Pay special attention to the "Approved Rim Width".

I checked Toyo, Nitto and Bridgestone. I dont' think there are any manufacture recommmand mounting 235 on a 17X7" rim.

Recommend -- no. Will it work -- yes.

Will it stay on at 100 MPH -- yes.

I would rather put a tire on a rim that is a 1/2" too narrow than overload the tire.

Take your pick...

Do you realize that 90% of the "upgraded" tires on this forum are NOT 93 + XL rated tires...

WRONG!!!!

The 225/45-17 is approved for mounting on a 7" rim.

Also, if you bother to look at the tire tables for a while you will notice that making that statement shows a lack of study...

As the tires get lower in profile, they require a wider rim. Go have a look at 50 and 60 series tires, then look at 45 and 40 series tires...

The nittos I have are rated 91W, is it too bad? what the ration on CL-P? both cars almost weigh the same. Why acura wants a 93 load rating for the CLS...?

No, I'm making a point.

That comment about the tires coming off at 100 MPH is total BS...

If you were driving in the desert at 140 MPH and 120 degrees F with 3 passengers -- well, maybe you should worry...

Hmm..you are right...225/45/17 will work on 17X7. When I made the comment about 225, I had 18" in my mind. The comment about 100mph. I said 100mph into a corner (turn). I wasn't talking about straight away. I have seen plenty of tires fell off the rims before. Not sure if they were due age of the tires, wrong size or underinflate.

I'm running on 17 x 7.5 BBS RX rollers but still with the OEM rubber. (When the rubber is more worn out I'll be increasing the diameter by getting 235/45/17's). I cannot imagine a half inch in width would make such a difference In handling UNLESS YOUR GOING CROSSING or other driving exotica! Addressing your worry about ride quality. My ride quality is still very very good and quiet on the 17" x 7.5" and I'm lowered. Maybe by going bigger you'll loose just to much of that lux feeling? (another reason why I'm not that anxious to go bigger on rims and way ultra aggressive rubber.

Lettuce no what you do.
