6 speeds...i broke something.

I was installing my aluminum shift bushings the other day. everything was going fine until i attempted to remove the larger bushing. I popped the bushing out of the post its attached to but then when attempting to take the bushing out of the cable something went pop when i was putting pressure in an upwards motion. I couldn't locate exactly what broke, but i ended up putting the aluminum bushing in anyways and reinstalled everything. I then saw what was broken.

see the two cables? one is on top and one is in the middle. what looks to be a dust boot is now loose on the top cable. the middle cable is what it should look like. so far it has not been affected driveability. However, I noticed that now 1st,3rd,and 5th it will pop into its normal place but if enough pressure is placed the shifter will move further forward than normal. the parts guy at the dealer said that the part affected is part of a larger assembly and he wasnt sure if it is repairable or not. I didnt have a chance to talk to a tech about it yet.

Any input on a fix?

1 - I cant see shit in your picture

2 - But from the description, did you make sure the clip is still holding it on the bracket?

well this is the best description of whats wrong. the plastic piece that is in the red circle must have a piece that broke off cause when i cover the rest of the cable with the boot and place that piece in the hole, my shifter stays in place. i guess my problem now is getting it to stay.

Looking at parts diagrams, Im not seeing a piece that is replaceable. You may have broken the cable end which results in replacing the cable entirely, but I cant say for sure.

yeah thats what i figured. well i thought it would be worse but $120 isnt too bad. the car is still drivable. i have been shifting slow just in case. the cable shows no fraying so i mite be good for a while.

still shifts. when the rubber boot looking thing is out like in the pictures above, then the shifter moves forward past the point it normally stops. when the boot is in the hole the 1st, 3rd, and 5th stop in the normal position. its kinda hard to explain but i did my best haha. im thinking about maybe using some tape or some type of adhesive to keep the boot/cover in the original position

Dont feal bad, I was trying to cut corners and not take the clips out and I did the EXACT same thing. You need to replace the whole cable. But before I could order a new cable, I epoxied the seem. That lasted a day. And seeing how I dont want to spend money or the time right now, I just made something at my work on a CNC that holds the cable to the bracket. To be honest, I think my shifts feel better than they ever did because of this. But in spring Ill replace the cable, just so I dont even have to think about it.

I think u should throw some crazy glue on there. nothing big to worry about other then dirt getting in there and slowing down ur shifting.

Wasn't there someone posting in the thread about buying these bushings that you have to remove the clips or else? Was it fuzzy?
Either way for future reference when doing this mod the clips #9 in the diagram must be removed for proper installation. Correct?

Wasn't me, but Someone else said you had to or they broke. Mine didn't. But yeah it's looks like that clip that holds it in part 9 in the parts pic is what's busted.

You have to replace the entire shift cable assembly. This happens when you don't unbolt the block I warned people about in the big shift bushing thread.

Yup, it'll keep the stick from popping back to the neutral spot by itself but shouldn't cause a lot of issues with getting into gear. Get it fixed as there is a chance it could bind and leave you stranded somewhere. It'll be a part they'll most likely have to order but it can be replaced without removing the center console (although for most people it'll be easier to remove it first).
